Raiders battle until the end against Aggies in tourney

Each night during a challenging season played amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Navarre’s boys basketball team played hard.

That was evident again Tuesday night in a District 1-6A quarterfinal against Tate. The Raiders tried to keep pace with the Aggies but simply could not do it despite cutting the lead to single digits early in the fourth quarter before falling 61-49.

Where’s Where Y’at Seafood at? As of a few months ago, Where Y’at Seafood Market and Restaurant is located on Highway 87 and they are loving their new spot.

“The one thing now that we didn’t have before is indoor seating, so that’s a big plus,” said owner T-Paul Ruiz. “We’re ecstatic. We love having more space.”

For two months, officials and citizens have been asking for county commissioners to reconsider the proposed repeal of some key wellfield protections.

These same concerned folks were hoping agencies like the Department of Environmental Protection of the Northwest Florida Water Management District would review the proposal and nix it.

UPDATE: Beach road to reopen Friday

UPDATE Thursday, 1:39 p.m.: Gulf Islands National Seashore officials will reopen the J. Earle Bowden Way, Highway 399 at 8 a.m. tomorrow to passenger vehicles, according to a press release sent out Thursday afternoon. Opal Beach day use loop D pavilions, restrooms and parking lot will also reopen. Temporary repairs to the road are sufficiently complete to safely reopen the road until the project to implement permanent repairs gets underway later this year.

Santa Rosa County Board of Commissioners unofficially unanimously committed at their monthly work session to vote against the repeal of some key wellfield protections that many felt would endanger the county’s drinking water.

I grew up in Mobile. Navarre was our most favorite secluded beach. In the 60s, my family would vacation in Destin.

By the early 70s, my friends and I had driver’s licenses and when it was just us guys wanting to spend a few days away camping and fishing, we always went to Navarre Beach.

Bridge renaming issue flares up at board meeting

Community efforts to rename portions of the Navarre Beach Bridge or dedicate portions of the roadway continue.

During the public comment portion of Tuesday’s Board of County Commission work session, resident Tony Hughes updated commissioners on a local group’s efforts to do a memorial dedication for the Navarre Causeway in honor of Air Commandos in general, and specifically Medal of Honor recipient (posthumous) MSgt. John Chapman, USAF.

Challenging season draws to a close for Raider soccer team

That “mental Goliath” Navarre first-year boys soccer coach James Baccarini refers to as Niceville wasn’t slayed on a rainy and chilly Friday night at the Ashton Brosnaham Complex in Pensacola.

Navarre had an opportunity to do it. It struck first against the Eagles in a District 1-6A semifinal but couldn’t hold on as it went on to fall 2-1 and see its 2020-21 season come to an end.
