The thistle’s awakening has begun

The botanical pause of winter is monotonous in its consistency. Each day, with very few exceptions, is just like the one before it with plants in suspended animation.

February brings the first inkling of the burst of activity coming to Santa Rosa County which will soon arrive with vigorous growth and riotous color. One herald for the landscape’s eruption is the awakening of thistles, native weeds entwined with many cultures reaching into antiquity.

It was the first Thursday of February, cold and damp outside but warm and welcoming inside Risen Savior Lutheran Church.

Ariel Michel is headed to the girls state weightlifting meet for the first time. She wasn’t sure if the moment would ever happen.

Michel lifted as a freshman and again as a junior. But her senior season has been one to remember, winning district and regional titles in the 139-pound weight class, an effort that has helped put Navarre on the brink of a state championship for the sixth time in program history.

But while the House and Senate unveiled identical bills for non-health care businesses, their proposals aren’t the same when it comes to legal protections for long-term care providers, hospitals, physicians and other parts of the health-care industry.
