Out and About

The Fourth of July is right around the corner and we’re expecting busy beaches, businesses and roadways.

We’re also expecting one of the biggest local fireworks shows on July 4th at 9 p.m., which will be shot from the end of the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier.

Truth needs to be everyone’s currency

There’s a difference between passion and speaking mistruths, as Navarre Press reminds readers in this week’s edition.

At the June 22 Santa Rosa Board of County Commission meeting, District 3 Commissioner James Calkins announced that Santa Rosa County was the only one in the state that had not yet instituted the Guardian Program.

For God’s Sake: We are quick to believe as truth things that are not

“Unencumbered by the facts, they gave their opinion,” I said to a colleague as we marveled at the concert of rumors and speculations swirling around an unfortunate incident in a church we were serving.

We were amazed at how eager some were to spread the byproduct of their fertile imaginations and how eager others were to believe them.

In-person Vacation Bible Study back at local churches

This past week marked the official start of summer. After a year of lockdowns and quarantines, local churches offered in-person Vacation Bible Schools.

A large, theater-style backdrop, created by a mother, transformed the platform at First Baptist Church of Navarre (FBCN) into “Destination Dig,” this year’s theme for VBS, which ran in the mornings from June 21-25.

Colleges get shield from COVID-19 lawsuits

Marking a victory for colleges and universities that shut down campuses last year during the COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill Tuesday shielding the schools from lawsuits seeking refunds for students because of the closures.

Campuses closed in March 2020 in an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19, with students forced to learn online.

New noise ordinance with ‘teeth’ approved

Help for citizens concerned about neighborhood noise potentially arrived June 22 when commissioners approved a new ordinance that will help the Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office enforce nuisance noise.

The ordinance, which passed 3-1, uses a decibel-based standard to enforce infractions rather than law enforcement determining if a noise is “plainly audible.”

Diverse food options are coming to the Midway area in the form of food trucks, thanks to local business owner Steven Aitken. Serving food ranging from Cajun and barbecue to coffee and desserts, GB Eatery Food Truck Plaza will be a one-stop shop, located at the intersection of Woodlawn Way and Highway 98.

Aitken said he hopes to open GB Eatery Food Truck Plaza in two to three months, near the end of summer.

Max Meyer making his mark with Blue Wahoos

Miami Marlins third overall draft pick Max Meyer is living up to the hype in his first season as a pro.

Meyer has fashioned a 3-1 start in his first nine outings with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, the Double-A affiliate of the Marlins, and believes he improves each time he pitches in a game.

Santa Rosa County will hold a ribbon-cutting for the Benny Russell Park expansion on Tuesday, July 6 at 9 a.m. The improvements included a splash pad with restroom, new playground for ages 5 through 12, fitness fun-zone court, multi-purpose trail, multi-purpose sports field, and picnic pavilions.

39 years of students reunite to honor Gulf Breeze High drama teacher

After 39 years dedicated to teaching and, 37 of those years spent pioneering the Gulf Breeze High School (GBHS) drama department, Margie Timmons retired from her fulfilling career.

Students from current and years past came together June 27 to surprise Timmons with an evening of performances at the Saenger Theatre in her honor. Actors and actresses, all at some point under the direction of Timmons, performed songs and scenes from old plays they had put on and took Timmons on a trip down memory lane, leaving her with tears in her eyes.
