The League of Women Voters of Florida is spreading the word about the voting rights restored to certain persons with felony convictions under Florida’s Amendment 4 (2018).
Full disclosure – our editor, Wendy Rudman, is helping me with this week’s column because I’ve been busy with some very important projects that I hope to share with you next week or the first paper of the new year.
Since you’ll be reading this just over a week before Christmas, I’ll start out with a Christmas theme.
The seasonally cooler weather has had a silencing effect on the nighttime chorus of insects, amphibians and most other animals. The frogs and cicadas are taking shelter in anticipation of the warmer months to come.
Common among the native nocturnal animals is the opossum (Didelphis virginiana). This resourceful scavenger is found in forested areas, fields and pastures, and even places with a high density of humans.
Midway Fire District (MFD) held its very own reverse Christmas parade on Dec. 14 at Tiger Point Park in Gulf Breeze. The “parade” consisted of multiple stations with firemen and Santa Claus himself handing out festive treats like cookies, candy canes and hot chocolate to attendees who remained in their vehicles.
Larry the Navarre Beach giraffe on Gulf Boulevard isn’t the only long-necked attraction in town. In addition to the glimpse drivers often get of the giraffes at Gulf Breeze Zoo, there’s a giraffe made out of recycled auto parts in Martha Powell’s yard.
Powell, who lives on Ferris Drive just a few doors down from the Holley by the Sea boundary, has named her giraffe Emily and dressed her in a Santa hat for the season.
Florida college officials are trying to figure out what’s behind a continuing drop in state college enrollment, which analysts project could decline by more than 9 percent over the next five years if the trend persists.
Florida’s aerospace agency pushed forward with negotiations Tuesday to bring 2,100 spacecraft manufacturing jobs to Brevard County over the next three years.
You can drive your self crazy seeking redemption. Emily Madril never got to that point. And now she’s a national champion.
Let it be known that the former Navarre soccer standout wanted redemption more than anything else in the world after the way last season ended. Florida State’s women’s soccer team lost in a penalty kick shootout to Santa Clara. Madril missed one of those kicks.
