Preserving history one headstone at a time

When most visit a cemetery, it’s to bury or visit a loved one. For those at Holley Point Cemetery Thursday, Feb. 23, they were there to help keep alive the memory of those who had been buried long ago.

They were there as part of a class put on by the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) to help the public learn more about the work that goes into preserving graveyards and maintaining the memory of the decedents interred there. The class is called the cemetery resource protection training (CRPT) workshop.

During a timeout late in the action of a lacrosse game Tuesday night at Jim Scoggins Stadium, the score all tied up, Brady Payton, one of four captains for the Navarre Raiders, challenged the team to get back on track and close the game out.

That energy within the huddle seemed to carry over to the field as Navarre scored four goals over the final five minutes of play to secure a 12-8 road win over the Pensacola Tigers.

Sea turtles and second chances: Keith Feldman’s journey to Navarre Beach

If you have been on the pier when a sea turtle gets rescued after a run-in with a fish hook or have spent anytime at the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center, then you may have seen or met Keith Feldman.

Before they can do that, the Navarre Beach Lifeguards prepare by honing their skills and knowledge through training. This goes for rookies and returning guards. With the season just over a week and half away, the lifeguards were out on the beach Feb. 18 and 19 to get ready.

For God’s Sake: To God be the glory

I occasionally have a troubling dream of the kind students have during a school year.

You know the kind, in your dream you arrive at school late and learn that you missed an important exam, or you were to give a presentation that day in class.

Navarre pastor visits Israel, Jordan

For those who believe in the God of Abraham (Christians, Jews and Muslims), the eastern Mediterranean has some of the holiest and most revered sites. This area is generally known as the Levant and is roughly comprised of Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria.

Getting to visit places within the Levant, notably Jerusalem, is a dream for many believers. For Jon Becker, pastor at Concord Presbyterian Church of Gulf Breeze, it was a dream fulfilled in 2023.
