Navarre resident takes her shot at Hollywood

Seeing yourself on the big screen or on television is a lifelong dream for many, and one Navarre resident is pursuing that dream.

Twanetta Pope, 25, has always loved movies and TV. She moved to Navarre when she was seven, graduating from Navarre High School in 2015.

Extra work fuels Lily-ana Campbell’s success

Lily-ana Campbell was driven to be her best for Saturday’s Wildcat Invitational at the Pensacola State Milton Campus.

“I busted my butt during practice this week,” Campbell said. “The past few weeks it was tough getting going, but this week I was just able to go hard.”

Long-awaited win over rival on hold for Navarre Raider volleyball team

Julia Irmen could almost reach out and touch how close Navarre was to changing the narrative of its volleyball match against rival Gulf Breeze in a near-packed gymnasium.

All the Raiders had to do was finish out the opening set. And they almost did. They had the lead late, up 22-17 and then 23-19, but when it came time to close the deal, they fell a little short last Thursday.

Brian Out Loud

I still remember my first week at the Navarre Press and the time I reached out to Navarre girls soccer coach Rob Simon about getting stats on his team as it prepared for a tournament game.

He shared the stats but also noted in his email that John Richardson, a freelance writer for our paper, is “their guy” when it comes to girls soccer coverage.

Sczesny inspired to swim her best

Claire Sczesny started swimming in middle school. Though she’s taken a few breaks here and there from the sport, it’s been something she has put a lot of time and effort into over the years.

Her sister, Olivia, a former Navarre Raider swimmer, helped encourage her to get into the sport.

Infrastructure tops county’s capital improvements plan

The proposed Fiscal Year 2023 budget for Santa Rosa County includes a record investment in capital projects, thanks partly to federal stimulus spending and higher property values.

“This is new for our county to have this much money set aside for infrastructure in the budget process, so it’s a big deal,” Sabrina White, the county’s assistant budget director, said. “It’s exciting times in Santa Rosa County.”

Shellfish harvesting closures highlight severe water-quality failures

The Healthy Gulf press conference conducted last week at the Milton Marina, where stakeholders’ worry about shellfish harvesting closures appeared palpable.

Christian Wagley of Healthy Gulf, community businesses and stakeholders expressed grave concerns about the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ planned closure of thousands of acres of area waters to shellfish harvesting because of continuous high fecal bacterial counts.

Looking back at Hurricane Ivan

Hurricane Ivan made landfall Sept. 16, 2004, just west of Navarre as a Category 3 storm. Ivan packed winds of 120 mph sustained and a historic storm surge, according to the National Weather Service.

Coastal areas from Mobile to Destin felt the brunt of Ivan’s wrath; aerial photographs taken days after the storm showed much smaller barrier islands (including Santa Rosa Island, which lost virtually all of its dunes and beaches).
