This weekend: Smokin’ in the square BBQ cookoff

Bring the family out for a wonderful day of food and fun!

On Sept. 16, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., St. Sylvester’s Catholic Church will host the Smokin in the Square BBQ Cookoff, an annual event to raise money for charity. This year, the event will send money to two charities, Catholic Charities of Northwest Florida and Little Sisters of the Poor Sacred Heart Residence.

I’ve been mostly out this week and about in other parts of Florida. Sarasota to be specific.

We brought seven of us to the Florida Press Conference to learn the latest trends and best practices in journalism and design. We also had our awards ceremony, and while Navarre Press didn’t win the overall trophy for our division, Santa Rosa Press Gazette did.

Blue Wahoos hosting summer celebration

The Blue Wahoos are hosting a summer celebration July 3 from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Blue Wahoos Stadium in Pensacola.

General admission is $5, though there is a VIP ticket available for the Hancock Whitney Club in the stadium, and it includes a full buffet, drinks, dessert and a cash bar.

A Navarre staple will soon be serving snow cones to locals and visitors at a second location.

Tommy’s Sno-Balls is opening a new location near the northern corner of Highway 87 and East Bay Boulevard. The new location will be known as Tommy’s Sno-Balls 2.

Jeremiah’s Italian Ice prepares to open location in Navarre

Tom Kennedy first became aware of Jeremiah’s Italian Ice in the early 2000s, when he would take his wife and two young daughters there, especially during University of Central Florida’s football season.

Over 20 years later, he is opening his first franchise with the company here in Navarre.
Jeremiah’s Italian Ice was first founded in 1996 with a location in Winter Park, Florida.
