Teen critically injured after car hits standing water

A 19-year-old Jay teen was critically injured Saturday afternoon when he lost control of the vehicle he was driving when it hit standing water.

The van was eastbound on Old Pollard Road, when the teen drove through the water and lost control. The van rotated , struck a mailbox, hit a drainage ditch and became airborne. The right side of the vehicle struck a tree and came to rest of the driver's side. The teen was ejected and pinned under the van, according to the Florida Highway Patrol media release.

Pensacola Bay Bridge is open again

The Pensacola Bay Bridge quietly reopened early Friday morning with no ribbon-cutting, fanfare or official advance announcement. It has been closed since it was damaged by a barge Sept. 16 that broke loose during Hurricane Sally.

Construction on the bridge continues, but two lanes are open from end to end.

Sex ed bill with ‘opt out’ approved in house

After a significant change, the House Education & Employment Committee on Thursday approved a bill that addresses sex education in schools and teed it up for consideration by the full House. Under the bill, which was approved in an 18-2 vote, school districts would be required to post notification on the home pages of their websites about the rights of students’ parents to opt out of sex education instruction.
