Conquering the climb

Former Navarre resident Jeff Juhnke first shared his plans to climb Mount Kilimanjaro with the Navarre Press in June. Now, he is back home after spending almost a month in Africa and excited to share his experience climbing the fourth tallest peak in the world.

Former Navarre Press reporter, Christine O’Connor was recently named the editor of a Rhode Island newspaper, the Bristol Phoenix. She said working at Navarre Press is making things very easy for her at the Phoenix. I’m not sure how to take that, but I’m glad that she is working where her passion is. She did a good job here and a good job for Navarre as a community when she worked for Navarre Press. Rhode Island might not be big enough for her.

Santa Rosa Medical Center Fun Fest weekend starts tomorrow, Friday, April 26.  You will see a full schedule of events in the middle of this section. There will be arts and crafts vendors, a children’s area with lot of inflatables and a lot of entertainer including Robert Wayne and Erik Paslay. Navarre Press will have a booth there the entire weekend so if you want to see us, please stop by and if you don’t want to see us, we will always be happy to see you.

Navarre Chamber’s Annual Health & Business Expo is this Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon at Navarre High School. The theme of this year’s Expo is “Showcasing the Heartbeat of Navarre.” There will be free health screenings with interactive booths and activities from local health care providers and local businesses, included Navarre Press. We will be writing prescriptions for “Acluism.” Of course, a subscription to Navarre Press is the right prescription for that dreaded disease. There has been a new feature added this year. There will be a Physician Q&A panel. To see the information on the panel, open up the Health and Business Expo guide enclosed in this issue.

Sacred Heart treats injuries in hurricane aftermath

As Hurricane Isaias made landfall in Northwest Florida, it brought dangerous winds and storm surge. After the storm passed, dangers were still present with downed power lines and trees.

Even the lack of electricity in homes presented dangers. Carbon monoxide buildup due to generator misuse led to hospitalizations and the death of at least one person in Escambia County.

Emergency Operations Center update: 8:40 a.m., Friday, Oct. 9

Navarre Press has embedded a reporter with the Santa Rosa County Emergency Operations Center in Milton. Emergency officials have issued a Zone C evacuation order for all county residents. County Administrator Brad Baker told reporters that officials expect a Category 2 hurricane upon landfall, with storm surge anywhere from 6 to 9 feet.

UWF Argos’ game against Northeastern State canceled

The University of West Florida football team isn’t playing Saturday after its game was canceled due to Hurricane Isaias.

The Argos were scheduled to take on Northeastern State out of Oklahoma at Darrell Gooden Stadium in what would have been their first home game of October.
