DeSantis proposes $1,000 bonuses for teachers, principals

Gov. Ron DeSantis is asking the Florida Legislature to provide bonuses for public school principals and teachers, using $216 million in federal pandemic relief money earmarked for education. The governor is floating $1,000 bonuses for public school principals and classroom teachers in grades PreK-12, which he estimates would go to 3,600 principals and nearly 180,000 teachers throughout the state.

Dead body believed to have been homicide victim

Human remains found Sunday in a wooded lot off of Sandy Forest Road in Milton are believed to belong to a homicide victim. At this time, all indicators are leading Major Crimes Detectives to suspect this death was a homicide, according to a Wednesday afternoon update from the Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office.

The remains were taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy and identification. The deceased has been identified but public release is pending notification of next-of-kin. The exact cause of death is still under investigation.

Local officials advocate at state level

Several local officials traveled to Tallahassee last week to meet with other county leaders and talk to local legislative members. The event was 2021 Legislative Day organized by the Florida Association of Counties.

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that all Floridians ages 40 and older will be eligible for COVID-19 vaccinations starting Monday. DeSantis focused initially on vaccinating seniors and health-care workers but has gradually loosened eligibility requirements. Here is a breakdown of the ages of people who had been vaccinated as of a Wednesday count:

— Ages 16 to 24: 99,482 people

— Ages 25 to 34: 241,935 people
