Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office to hold K-9 Unit demonstrations at county schools

Beginning this Mon., Mar. 14, the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit will be hosting the USPCA Region 1 Field Trials here in Santa Rosa County. The Trials are a week-long event which is a certification and a competition. Activities start Mon., 8:00 am at Gulf Breeze High School. This day will consist of obedience and agility. Tues., 8:00 am at GBHS, there will be suspect area searches. Wednesday will be apprehension work. Thursday morning the apprehension work will continue until completed. All events are open to the public.

Records fall as Raiders win own invitational

Four records were broken, including two by Kamal Rustom, as Navarre rolled to a win in its own weightlifting invitational Wednesday night.

Rustom, who competes in the 154-pound weight class, was the pound for pound champion and set invitational records for clean and jerk and overall total. He was one of five lifters to win his respective weight class.

Set Free Refuge opens transitional home for human trafficking survivors

Standing in a freshly painted and decorated room, a young woman stands with suitcases in hand taking in the sunshine from the large windows in the living and dining room areas. Two women greet her and say, “Welcome home.” The young woman is in awe of the beautiful space and the reality that this is a new start to the rest of her life. She is shown her new room and bathroom with all the necessities from newly purchased sheets and towels to the small touches of a new hairbrush on the bathroom counter.

Santa Rosa cold weather shelter to open Fri., Mar. 11 through Sun., Mar. 13

The cold weather shelter for the homeless and/or heatless will open nights Fri., Mar. 11 through Sun., Mar. 13 at Ferris Hill Baptist Church, 6848 Chaffin St. in Milton. Those who would like to stay at the shelter must arrive between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Only service animals (with verification of rabies vaccination) are permitted to stay with guests. No one will be admitted after 8:30 p.m. unless brought in by law enforcement. The shelter closes at 7 a.m. each morning.
