South to freedom: Northwest Florida’s role in Underground Railroad

Northwest Florida is rich in history, but one part of its history has been getting more attention from historians in recent years.

In September 2021, the Pensacola Pass was recognized as an Underground Railroad site by the National Park Service. The following year, in November, Fort Pickens attained the same status. Both sites are part of NPS’s National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, which consists of 700 listings in 39 states, plus Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

FPL bills to dip slightly in May

The state Public Service Commission has approved a plan that will provide a break to Florida Power & Light customers because of lower-than-expected natural gas prices.
The plan, which the commission unanimously supported without discussion, will reduce customers’ monthly bills starting in May — and partially offset increases that took effect in April.

Navarre unable to pull off upset of Patriots

Through two innings there was no score. After four, it was only a 3-1 game, Navarre’s softball team still harboring hope of an upset over one of the nation’s best teams.

What the Raiders couldn’t do against Pace, though, was avoid the mistakes that the No. 3 team in Florida is always quick to cash in on.

Parental rights in education have become a massive issue politically, not just in Florida, but across the country. One group is helping lead that charge.

Moms for Liberty, a nonprofit advocacy group based in Melbourne, Florida, has campaigned against COVID-19 restrictions in schools, school curriculums that mention critical race theory or gender ideology and some chapters have campaigned to remove certain books that address gender or sexuality from school libraries.

How Easter killed my faith in atheism

It was the worst news I could get as an atheist: my agnostic wife had decided to become a Christian. Two words shot through my mind. The first was an expletive; the second was “divorce.”

I thought she was going to turn into a self-righteous holy roller. But over the following months, I was intrigued by the positive changes in her character and values.

Return to writing has been enjoyable experience

It seems a little hard to believe, but it’s been a little more than four months since I joined the staff here at the Crestview News Bulletin and Santa Rosa’s Press Gazette.

While my primary job as editor has me working with our reporters on stories, organizing the budgets of the papers and of course editing all the stories, photo captions and graphics for accuracy and grammar (I do apologize for mistakes that sneak past me, they annoy me as well), this job has also given me a chance to return to my roots as a reporter and writer.
