Legends and Lore Tour returns to Bagdad Cemetery

Meet prominent residents from Bagdad’s past and learn their stories during the Bagdad Cemetery Association’s free Legends and Lore Tour. The event was suspended because of COVID, but volunteers have revived the educational two-hour presentation, which takes place between 10 a.m. and noon Saturday at the cemetery, 6800 Pooley Street in Bagdad.

Rudman files Carli bill again for 2024 legislative session

Florida Rep. Dr. Joel Rudman (R-Navarre) has filed a custody exchange safety bill for the forthcoming 2024 legislative session. The bill, known as the Cassie Carli bill, would require Sheriff’s Offices in each county to come up with at least one designated safe custody exchange place within their jurisdiction. According to Rudman’s office, the safe-exchange location will be signified by a purple light in the parking lot of a Sheriff station or substation. The location must have 24/7 video monitoring as well as adequate lighting.

Budget workshop could help frame revenue debate

The Santa Rosa County Budget Office has scheduled a budget workshop beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, to discuss how the county’s budget is funded and additional ways in which the county could increase revenues.

Eddington defends meetings with business owners

Santa Rosa County Commissioner Ray Eddington angrily denied any wrongdoing when meeting with local business owners.
“I’ve got some people saying I’m doing backdoor deals; I’m not doing backdoor deals,” Eddington said at the Board of County Commissioners’ regular meeting Thursday, Oct. 12. The first-term commissioner said he’s meeting with area business owners to ask for their help making improvements in District 4, which includes Holley, Navarre and Navarre Beach.

Run for the Reef brings largest turnout ever

More than 500 registered runners and walkers participated in this year’s Run for the Reef Oct. 14, making it the largest turnout yet in the event’s 15-year history. The race consisted of a 5K, 10K and children’s 1-mile fun run. All proceeds from this event go towards the Navarre Beach Marine
Sanctuary, which consists of multiple artificial reefs.

Helping homeless students

There is a little-known problem in Santa Rosa County’s schools. According to Santa Rosa County District Schools’ coordinator of federal programs Bobbie Lewter, the district has a poverty rate of 43.54 percent.
