NOAA Fisheries monitoring whales spotted along Emerald Coast

If you were on the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier April 5, then you caught a whale of a sight.

Two North Atlantic right whales, dubbed “Koala” and “Curlew,” were spotted just off the pier and have been seen numerous times along the Gulf Coast, with sightings from Southwest Florida to Alabama. Most sightings have taken place since January.

East Bay K-8 student wins professional communication skills competition

For the past decade, Santa Rosa District Schools have been participating in ‘The Amazing Shake,’ a professional communication and soft skills competition geared toward middle school age students.

Held in conjunction with local businesses such as Navy Federal Credit Union, the Amazing Shake features several stages of competition, ultimately coalescing into a regional final between nine students from Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. Each student represents a different school.

As Easter approaches, discussions surrounding the historical existence of Jesus, his resurrection, and artifacts like the Shroud of Turin gain prominence. The Shroud, a linen cloth made of flax, is considered the most studied archaeological artifact of all time, yet many remain unaware of its existence. Measuring approximately 14 feet long and 3.5 feet wide, it bears the full-length image of a crucified man, showing signs of rigor mortis, with wounds consistent with biblical accounts of Jesus’ crucifixion.

Veteran riders group visits Navarre American Legion on trip to Florida’s Gold Star memorials

The low heavy roar of the motorcycles could be heard from a couple of blocks away. The riders were definitely on their way.

American Legion Post 382, located on E Esplanade Street in Navarre, was preparing to house Flags of Honor Escorts, a veterans’ motorcycle group, for the night, Friday, April 4. The group, which had close to a dozen members stop by Navarre, had just held a memorial service at Pensacola’s Veterans Memorial Park to honor Gold Star families and servicemembers who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Oriole Beach boat ramp may be updated with FWC grant

Oriole Beach Boat Ramp needs some improvements and Santa Rosa County hopes to have found a solution.

The Board of County Commissioners recently approved the submission of the Florida Boating Improvement Program (FBIP) Grant application for boat ramp and parking lot improvements at the Oriole Beach Boat Ramp facility.

When I originally wrote this column last week, there were openings for the boys basketball head coaching positions at two schools in Santa Rosa County.


But I had to make a few changes as Milton has since filled its void. Navarre’s job is still open but will be filled at some point later this spring.

Wilson goes out a champ; Raiders top three at state again

Josh Wilson stood on the stage inside the RP Funding Center on Saturday afternoon, with a smile on his face and a medal around his neck. He pointed to the scoresheet in his hand.


Wilson was a state weightlifting champion for the first time, joining a select list of Navarre Raiders to achieve the feat.
