Business unemployment taxes going up as jobless claims slow

TALLAHASSEE --- State unemployment taxes are going up for businesses struggling amid the coronavirus pandemic, as the pace of new jobless claims continues to slow in Florida.

The U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday estimated 20,787 new jobless claims were filed in Florida during the holiday-shortened week that ended Nov.  28. That was an estimated 23 percent reduction in new claims from the prior week.

Blackwater inmate kills cellmate to secure death penalty

A circuit court judge sentenced a Blackwater Correctional inmate to death Nov. 24 after he strangled his cellmate to death in hopes of receiving the death penalty.

Thomas Fletcher, 53, was serving a life sentence in Blackwater State Prison for a prior murder in 2018 when he strangled Kenneth Davis to death in their cell in the early morning hours. Fletcher confessed to the crime and plead guilty, waiving his rights to hearings in the hopes that he would secure death.

Navarre dominates Milton in girls soccer battle

Maia Vacks has been on a mission lately. That didn’t change Tuesday night at the NYSA Soccer Complex as she recorded her second consecutive hat trick to help Navarre’s girls soccer team crush Milton 10-2.

Vacks has scored seven goals in the last four games and the Wayne State College signee was just glad to help propel the Raiders to their fourth victory of the season.

Navarre hangs on in second half for win over Gators

There was a point late in the third quarter when things got a little tight for Navarre in its season-opening game against Escambia Monday night.

Once ahead by double digits, the Raiders now led by just two late in the third quarter and managed to stay in front moving forward into the fourth as they hung on for a 53-47 over the Gators in Pensacola.

Standing ground against ‘Campus Carry’

TALLAHASSEE --- Delivering what likely will be his final address to Florida State University’s Faculty Senate, President John Thrasher this week pledged to continue his efforts to keep guns off campus.

Thrasher, an FSU alum who announced earlier this year that he intends to step down as president, has long opposed proposals that would allow people with concealed-weapons licenses to carry firearms on Florida college and university campuses.

Judge backs state in fight over damages

TALLAHASSEE --- In the latest chapter in a long-running legal battle, a circuit judge has ruled that the Florida Department of Transportation cannot be forced to pay damages to bondholders because of lost toll revenues on a Panhandle bridge.

The ruling by Leon County Circuit Judge John Cooper centered on the Garcon Point Bridge, which spans part of Pensacola Bay but has never produced enough money from tolls to pay off bonds that financed its construction.

Local unemployment rate dips

Santa Rosa County’s unemployment rate has reached pre-COVID-19 levels, making it the third lowest unemployment rate in the state, according to the latest numbers from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.

Non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the county dropped to 3.8% in November, the same rate that was touted with excitement back in 2019. The county got down to 2.8% before the pandemic came crashing in.

Williams lifelong champion for her students

When Brooke Williams was in Kelly Foster’s fourth grade class at Oriole Beach Elementary School, she had no idea she would be in the same school as a teacher.

Fast forward 20 years and Williams is teaching a fourth-grade inclusion class right across the hall from her old classroom and Foster is her co-worker.
