CORRECTED: One-third of county is fully vaccinated

Just 33% of Santa Rosa County residents who can be vaccinated are fully vaccinated, according to Brad Baker, the county’s public safety director. In addition to those 62,393 residents, an additional 13,426 have received the first dose of a vaccination.

Editorial: Concerned about our county

Over the 21-plus years Navarre Press has been covering Santa Rosa County, there have been many challenging times. We have reported on damaging hurricanes, a recession and legal battles that have divided elected officials and residents.

But it seemed we were on a good path heading into 2021. The Board of County Commissioners had a mix of experience and new perspectives, the staff had a strong leader in County Administrator Dan Schebler and county growth was encouraging.

Vaccinations up in county; so are the number of COVID cases

The number of people vaccinated for COVID-19 nearly doubled last week, with 1,843 people receiving vaccinations compared to 938 the week before. About 45% of the population is now vaccinated.

But the number of cases and hospitalizations also increased dramatically too. Santa Rosa now has the fourth highest positivity rate in the state at 27.6. That means more than a quarter of the people being tested are positive for the virus.

Santa Rosa COVID cases double in one week

COVID-19 positivity rates are rising in Santa Rosa County, a trend that is also being seen statewide.

Last week saw 938 people vaccinated in Santa Rosa, up from 624 the week before.  But the number of new cases more than doubled in one week, rising from 219 to 441. The positivity rate jumped from 15% to 23.2% in the same time frame.

Sex offender arrested for illegally being in county park

A convicted registered sex offender was arrested after being caught in the Navarre County Park July 6 according to his Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office arrest report. There is a sign posted at the park saying sexual offenders and sexual predators are not allowed to be there.
