Looking at Santa Rosa County’s 2040 Comprehensive Plan can be misleading. Under capital improvements, the plan only lists 32 improvements for the past five years.

Almost all were paid for by state, federal or grant funding, not from county coffers.

Second waste hauler approved for county

Waste Pro’s monopoly of Santa Rosa County trash collection ended before it could begin as county commissioners Nov. 24 unanimously approved another hauler’s permit appeal.

Waste Pro was set to take over as the only collector in Santa Rosa County Jan. 1 thanks to a contract with the county, but with the approval, Adams Sanitation will be scooping up about 3,000 of their roughly 26,000 would-be customers.

County tourism cashes in $3.5 million

Tourism losses from COVID-19 in Santa Rosa County were only a fraction of what was projected.

The final tourism tax report for fiscal year 2019-2020 presented Nov. 5 left Tourist Development Council (TDC) members smiling. The year totaled more than $3.5 million of revenue to the county’s tourism promotion arm.

County seeks canal regulations

Deteriorated properties along canals in Santa Rosa County need to shape up if a new proposed ordinance is adopted.

County commissioners gave the thumbs-up to advertise a public hearing on a new canal ordinance. The proposed ordinance will require docks, piers, boathouses and seawalls along man-made canals in the county to be maintained so as not to be a hazard to the public or navigation and to not damage neighboring property.
