Broadcast classrooms connect students, educators from across county

When you walk into Dan Schmitt’s classroom at Holley Navarre Middle School, you immediately notice the rather large screens that dot the front portion of the room. These screens are not meant to show movies or videos, but to help connect students dozens of miles away.

For many years, if you were a student who wanted to take a certain class that wasn’t offered at your school, then you were simply out of luck. But with broadcast classrooms, Santa Rosa County District Schools has given students that chance.

County millage remains unchanged for 15th-straight year

Outgoing Santa Rosa County Commission Chairman Bob Cole issued a good-natured challenge to his fellow commissioners at last week’s final budget hearing.

“I’m happy to say that in the years I’ve served on this board, I’ve never raised the millage,” said Cole, who is retiring when his fifth fouryear term ends later this year. “So, that’s a goal you guys can set – for 20 years you can’t change the millage.”

Infrastructure tops county’s capital improvements plan

The proposed Fiscal Year 2023 budget for Santa Rosa County includes a record investment in capital projects, thanks partly to federal stimulus spending and higher property values.

“This is new for our county to have this much money set aside for infrastructure in the budget process, so it’s a big deal,” Sabrina White, the county’s assistant budget director, said. “It’s exciting times in Santa Rosa County.”

Santa Rosa Animal Services to reduce adoption fees for National Adoption Weekend

Santa Rosa County Animal Services (SRCAS) and Best Friends Animal Society, a leading animal welfare organization working to save the lives of cats and dogs in America’s shelters by 2025, are teaming up for another adoption campaign to encourage people to choose to adopt, not buy, their next pet.

“We’ve seen an influx in our homeless animal population over the last year or so, right in line with nationwide trends, we’re hoping these reduced adoption fees will encourage more adoptions and find homes for some of our long-time residents,” Dr. Megan Arevalo, SRCAS Veterinarian, said.

Proposed Navarre Town Center plan to go before County Commission

The proposed Navarre Town Center has a new look.

A rendering by DAG Architects from August reveals several updates to the town center concept, which Bob Benaquis, owner of TC’s Front Porch, has been working on with architects and other developers. Benaquis has been trying to get a town center for Navarre for over a decade but has only recently gained traction in moving ahead with plans.

The biggest update to the Navarre Town Center is the idea of having a pedestrian walkover to connect Navarre Park to the north side of Highway 98, where the town center would be.

Campy Boggy Creek, a “serious fun” camp for children with serious illnesses in Eustis, Fla., is the program for the GFWC Santa Rosa Woman’s Club’s meeting.

Building boom shaping county’s future

Rapid growth – and how to manage it – has become a key issue in this year’s Santa Rosa County elections. County commission candidates are debating issues like infrastructure impact fees, traffic concurrency, and amending the Land Development Code.

But none of the candidates doubt that growth will continue, and that our county will be forever changed.
