It’s a start. That was my initial thought when I learned that Santa Rosa County is dipping its toes into the middle school sports game.

Starting this coming school year, the county will finally offer what we’ll call an appetizer menu of sports for junior high athletes. Cross-country, track and 3-on-3 basketball are the options those athletes will have an opportunity to compete in.

School district to host Wellness Expo at Pace High tonight

Santa Rosa County District Schools Student Services Department is hosting a Wellness Expo from 6-7:30 p.m. tonight in the Pace High School gymnasium. The expo will feature local agencies and organizations connecting the community to mental and physical wellness resources.

South end high school opening pushed back to 2026

Residents in the Midway area will have to wait another year longer for a new 195,000-square-foot high school to open.

At the April 4 Santa Rosa County School Board meeting, DAG Architects announced that the new south end school’s opening is being pushed back to August 2026. It had originally be planned to open in Fall 2025.

Rebekah Jones’ son arrested after alleged school threats

The teenage son of Rebekah Jones, a data analyst and former Democratic Party candidate for U.S. House, has been charged with intimidation, a second-degree felony.

Jackson Jones, 13, was arrested for allegedly threatening to conduct a mass shooting at Holley Navarre Middle School, where he was previously a student. The threats first came to the attention of Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office March 20, when an East Bay K8 student told school officials about a school shooting threat she saw on social media.

DeSantis, BoCC announce broadband awards

The Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners tentatively approved spending $1.5 million to help bring rural broadband access to communities along Munson Highway in the northeast part of the county. Just hours earlier, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced an award of almost $3.4 million to expand access in the communities of Allentown, Chumuckla, Pace and Wallace in the county’s northwest.

Rhodes Elementary student cooking competitively

Braxton Parker always knew he wanted to be a chef; he just didn’t know he would be recognized for it at such an early age.

Parker, a third-grade student at Rhodes Elementary School, won Santa Rosa County District Schools’ 2023 Sodexo Future Chefs Challenge. His official title after winning the competition is Santa Rosa County Future Chef Grand Champion.

Navarre man arrested in Friday’s fatal shooting

A Navarre man has been arrested for first degree murder related to a fatal shooting that took place Friday afternoon in Navarre.

Aubrey James Luker, 41, surrendered to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office Friday at the 8200 block of Country Bay Boulevard.
