Navarre residents trek the Camino de Santiago
Since the ninth century, Christian pilgrims have journeyed along a network of paths across France, Portugal and Spain to visit the shrine of the apostle James in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain.
The pilgrimage, known as the Way of St. James or Camino Santiago, encompasses hundreds of miles of trails through cities and countryside. According to some scholars and historians, it is also the route James the greater took into Spain, where he preached the gospel. He is said to have been buried in Santiago de Compostela.
