Brian Out Loud

Once upon a time, flag football at Navarre was merely a dream. The closest players came to it was the annual powder puff game between the girls in the junior and senior classes.

Things have changed. The dream has become a reality as Navarre has made a name for itself in the sport.
It doesn’t surprise me. It shouldn’t surprise you either.

Classroom turns into a poetry cafe

A fourth-grade classroom at West Navarre Intermediate was transformed into a poetry café Monday.

Samantha Fowler’s students have been studying poetry for the past two weeks and were given the opportunity to write their own poem, which they then read to their classmates on a makeshift stage that even featured a prop microphone.

A look at where the Raiders rank heading into the state weightlifting meet

Ten lifters will compete for Navarre at next Saturday’s 3A state weightlifting meet in St. Cloud. The Raiders are the reigning champs in 2A but moved up to 3A this season.

Navarre won’t go into this year’s meet favored to win it but the Raiders do have several lifters who could place at state, including TJ Peltier, who is ranked second in his weight class.

Park ranger recognized for saving two Navy cadets from drowning

Violent waves crashed the shore March 27 as U.S. park ranger Andrew Robinson dove into the cold Gulf of Mexico at Opal Beach to save two distressed swimmers about 100 yards out.

A 25-year-old male and a 19-year-old female, both Navy cadets, got caught in a rip current that pushed them out into the rough waters past the breaking point that Saturday afternoon. Robinson scanned the water after being alerted by a beachgoer and noticed them struggling to stay afloat. He immediately took action.

The Holley-Navarre Fire District responded to an early morning Wednesday in the 8900 block of Orlando Avenue.

The call came in about 3 a.m., with the caller advising that the house was filled with smoke and the fire was coming from the area of a gas grill on the lanai in the rear of the residence. Everyone was out of the house, the caller said.

Defense sets tone for Raider flag football team once again

Defense has become a trademark of the 2021 edition of Navarre’s flag football team, and if a reminder was needed, it was sent out Thursday night under the lights of Bennett C. Russell Stadium.

Every time Gulf Breeze tried to make a big play, Navarre shut it down on its way to a 13-0 win over the rival Dolphins on senior night.

Raiders keep focus on positives despite loss to Jaguars

When Jessica Farrer crushed a home run over the fence in the fifth inning of Thursday night’s game against West Florida Tech, her teammates and the fans cheering her on as she rounded the bases, it appeared as if Navarre had tightened its grasp on the momentum.

On a personal level for the sophomore, it was a big moment.
