This weekend is the Mardi Gras parade.

If you plan on going, please get over to the island early. Parade veterans start setting up chairs sometimes as early as the night before, but definitely are there by 9 a.m. with their morning coffee.

Local historian and professor pens new book

History professor Brian Rucker is well known in these parts for his contributions to chronicling local history. From the local ancient Indian civilizations that populated these parts to current times, Rucker has taught and written much of what we understand today as Santa Rosa County’s history.

His newest book takes on a new topic, one dear to many folks in Florida and beyond. In Worlds within the World, Rucker chronicles the resort hotels within Walt Disney World and the unique experience each has to offer.

For God’s Sake: Thankful for God’s all-sufficient grace

My first achievement for the new year was to get COVID. It first made its presence known with a scratchy throat on Tuesday of that first week.

The next morning, it unpacked its bags for a lengthy stay gifting me with what felt like a deluxe cold, the premium version with all the accessories: cough, congestion, headache, fever. I assumed it was only a bad cold.

Special needs PE teacher honored, gives credit to his team

Adaptive Physical Education (PE) teacher Zachary (Zach) Butler is Santa Rosa School District’s Teacher of the Year. Butler teaches PE to Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students in the south-end schools, is loved by many and has a heart for special needs students.

As soon as he was announced by Superintendent Karen Barber in the Oriole Beach Elementary School library Friday morning, he gave credit to his team that helps him every day.

For God’s Sake: The One we are following knows the way

My wife and I recently spent a morning running errands. We emerged from our neighborhood into a thick blanket of marine fog. Visibility on Navarre Parkway was less than a quarter of a mile.

The bridge to Navarre Beach arched into a misty uncertainty. Buildings and trees emerged from the mist as faint shadows and only gradually took on definition.

Florida representative submits bill to add another step to incorporation

Rep. Jayer Williamson filed a bill to the Florida House of Representatives Dec. 27 that would require a referendum for any prospective municipality incorporation, making Williamson’s “personal requirement” a Florida law.

HB 1035 would include a paragraph in F.S. 165.041 requiring the “passage of a nonbinding referendum … supporting the incorporation of a new municipality approved by 60% or more of the qualified electors within the area of the proposed municipality.”
