The registration closed Tuesday, Oct. 11. Locally this election will decide your District 2 commissioner and District 4 commissioner for Santa Rosa County. You will also vote on whether or not you want Holley Navarre Fire District to be able to levy ad valorem taxes instead of the non-ad valorem fee you are currently paying.

Shellfish harvesting closures highlight severe water-quality failures

The Healthy Gulf press conference conducted last week at the Milton Marina, where stakeholders’ worry about shellfish harvesting closures appeared palpable.

Christian Wagley of Healthy Gulf, community businesses and stakeholders expressed grave concerns about the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ planned closure of thousands of acres of area waters to shellfish harvesting because of continuous high fecal bacterial counts.

Carli family laments slow autopsy results

Months after Cassie Carli’s body was found in a barn in Alabama, autopsy results have not been released. For the Carli family, the wait to find out exactly what happened to their loved one has been “agonizing.”

Carli went missing on March 27 following a custody exchange with her ex-boyfriend, Marcus Spanevelo, for their four-year-old daughter, Saylor. The exchange took place in the boat ramp parking lot on Navarre Beach near Juana’s. It was the last place she was seen alive.

A board divided

The Holley Navarre Water System board of directors is once again a divided mess.

Unfortunately, the board members demanding transparency to the membership are in the minority. The other half of the board is being as transparent as mud.

Water company CEO terminated

Dallas Peavey, Jr., head of Holley Navarre Water System, has been terminated by the board following a closed executive session meeting held last night by board members.

The meeting came after accusations about Peavey’s past resurfaced more than a week ago. It was the second such meeting held to discuss the accusations and potential action of the board.

It is hard to believe that our schools will be back in session next week.

The summer just flew by for us and I’m sure it did the same for you. Kindergarten through 12th grade students go back to school on Wednesday, August 10, and their first holiday is September 5 for Labor Day.

Peavey under fire at water system

“By the time we caught on, he had defrauded the company out of something like $25,000,” Wilkinson said. “He was terminated immediately, and we filed suit.”

On Mar. 4, 2009, a warrant was issued for the arrest of Peavey, and he was remanded in custody that day at 2:20 p.m. He was charged with three counts of felony theft. On Mar. 20, 2009, Peavey was released on a $20,000 personal bond.

Airman discharged over vaccine refusal

There has been quite a bit of controversy over the past couple years surrounding the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, especially around vaccines.
