An Eglin Air Force Base captain was recognized Thursday for saving the life of a neighbor’s tiny baby who had stopped breathing.

Christopher A. Mavron and his wife, Pilar, were about to leave their Navarre home to head to a softball practice on the afternoon of May 23 when a neighbor ran out of her house calling for help.

Toddler found drowned Sunday evening may have died hours earlier

The father of a 1-year-old who was found drowned in a Navarre Beach canal Sunday night is responsible for her death, according to his Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office arrest report. Through “culpable negligence,” he failed to supervise his daughter, the report said.

Although his daughter, Makennah Potter, who turned 1 last week, was found in the evening, the failure of supervision took place between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. that afternoon.

On June 13, 1931, the counties of Escambia and Santa Rosa celebrated the opening of not only the Pensacola Bay Bridge that joined Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties, but also a bridge that crossed Santa Rosa Sound to a newly constructed casino at Pensacola Beach.

The father of a 1-year-old found dead in a canal on Navarre Beach Sunday night has been charged with homicide negligent manslaughter.

Tracy Colton Potter was booked early this morning. His daughter was found drowned in a canal about 8:30 p.m. by a concerned neighbor.

A woman accused of knocking her husband into the bathtub area while trying to keep him from recording their argument on his cell phone received an additional charge after insisting she bring her purse with her to the Sheriff’s Office.

And that safety extends to the welfare of the marine animals that call the area around the pier home.

Second child drowns in Navarre waters in just over a week

A 1-year-old child was pulled from the canal adjacent to 7372 Grand Navarre Boulevard Sunday evening, according to Navarre Beach Fire Rescue Chief Danny Fureigh. The little girl’s death marks the second child drowning death in Navarre in just over a week.

Emergency officials were called to that home just after 8 p.m. A concerned neighbor pulled the body of the toddler out of the canal at about 8:30 p.m.

The Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office has been called and is handling the investigation.
