Lion tamers! Navarre Raiders pass road test with win over Leon

The one thing Navarre hasn’t done this season is start fast offensively against an opponent.

That changed on Friday as the Raiders built a two-touchdown lead in the first quarter and went on to defeat Leon 24-14 on a fall-like September evening at Gene Cox Stadium in Tallahassee.

No quick fix: Heavy rains flood local streets

In a span of seven days, nearly 8 inches of rain fell in the Navarre area. That total includes almost an inch on Sunday, an inch and a half on Friday and more than three and a half inches Thursday.

That was the day the stormwater system in the Ortega Drive neighborhood became officially overwhelmed.

Red tide hits neighboring county

The Florida Department of Health in Okaloosa County (DOH-Okaloosa) is notifying the public of a red tide bloom near James Lee Beach in Destin. Some people may have mild and short-lived respiratory symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation similar to cold symptoms, according to Thursday’s press release.

Recycling likely to resume in early October

Although no solid date has been given, Santa Rosa County officials have been told that recycling will likely resume the first two weeks of October. Service was discontinued temporarily after a July 15 fire at Emerald Coast Utilities Authority’s recycling facility.

That is where Santa Rosa County’s recyclables are taken for Waste Pro’s customers in unincorporated portions of the county.

Argos won’t play football this weekend

The excitement of the first UWF football game of the season at Blue Wahoos Stadium will have to wait another month.

The top-ranked Argos (3-0) have had their game against Fort Lauderdale canceled this weekend.

Revenge will have to wait for the Raider volleyball team

Navarre head volleyball coach Ryan Davenport stood near his team’s bench and threw his hands up at one point late in last Tuesday’s match against Milton.

It was just one of those nights where enough didn’t go right as the Raiders lost to the rival Panthers for the second time this season.
