On Thursday, April 6, Holley Navarre Water System cut the ribbon for a new drinking water supply well off Pinewood Lane in Harold. It is Well No. 7 for the Fairpoint Regional Utility System, which is comprised of three member utilities, of which HNWS is one.

When I left my house this morning my granddaughter was watching dancing vegetables on the living room TV and she was mesmerized.

My four children were not raised watching screens or TV and I had already cautioned my daughter about getting her daughter hooked on screens.

Middle school sports are a start; school board, county can do better

Excited social media posts rippled across Santa Rosa County last week when the school board approved adding a limited middle school sports program.

It’s about time. Our neighbors in Escambia and Okaloosa counties have offered robust middle school sports programs for years while Santa Rosa County families wonder why they don’t have the same opportunity.

DeSantis, BoCC announce broadband awards

The Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners tentatively approved spending $1.5 million to help bring rural broadband access to communities along Munson Highway in the northeast part of the county. Just hours earlier, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced an award of almost $3.4 million to expand access in the communities of Allentown, Chumuckla, Pace and Wallace in the county’s northwest.

Rhodes Elementary student cooking competitively

Braxton Parker always knew he wanted to be a chef; he just didn’t know he would be recognized for it at such an early age.

Parker, a third-grade student at Rhodes Elementary School, won Santa Rosa County District Schools’ 2023 Sodexo Future Chefs Challenge. His official title after winning the competition is Santa Rosa County Future Chef Grand Champion.

Growing up in Canada, my first taste of pineapple was from a can.

Those perfectly sliced rings of gold, floating in juice, looked enticing, but they tasted a lot like the can. Pinning them to the side of a Sunday ham and immolating them in an oven did little to improve the taste.
