Sheriff’s Office holds annual Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office was joined by the community Monday, May 6, for a Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony to honor fallen officers across Florida. Held at the sheriff’s office administrative facility in East Milton, the agency honored three fallen Santa Rosa County officers and five other officers from various other agencies.

United Methodist General Conference sees major changes for denomination

The past few years have been nothing short of controversial for the United Methodist Church, one of the largest denominations within the United States. With thousands of congregations leaving the church over issues such as LGBTQ clergy, the 2024 annual UMC general conference promised to garner attention from Methodist believers across the board.

During the conference, which was held in Charlotte, North Carolina April 23 to May 3, UMC made sweeping changes to their policies regarding acceptance of clergy with non-heterosexual orientation, reduction of U.S. bishops, and regionalization of the UMC.

Navarre High student wins Congressional art competition

A Navarre student’s artwork is heading to Washington, D.C.

Noah Villarreal, a junior at Navarre High School, competed in the 2024 Congressional Art Competition and was named the first-place prize winner for Florida’s first congressional district. Villareal’s art piece was among 193 entrees from across the district, which stretches from Escambia County to Walton County. According to U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, it was the most successful year of the art competition.

Keller Williams donates over $4k to Emerald Coast Exceptional Families for ‘Red Day’

On Thursday, May 9, Keller Williams Emerald Coast in Navarre presented a check for $4,800 to Emerald Coast Exceptional Families, a 501c3 nonprofit which provides support services to special needs families.

The money will go toward funding for the SAFE program, something ECEF started with the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office in 2022. The SAFE program is meant to foster better communication between law enforcement agencies and the special needs community.

Navarre Beach sees slow start to sea turtle nesting season

It’s that time of year again. The beaches fill with visitors and sea turtles are in nesting season.

Summer is nearly upon us, and the beaches of the Emerald Coast are once again welcoming visitors from all over, including those who have swum a long way to get here. From May to October, sea turtles visit the beaches of Florida to nest, leaving their eggs to hatch and their hatchlings to find their own way back to the Gulf of Mexico.

Florida Department of Health restricts Gulf Breeze plastic surgeon’s license

The Florida Department of Health (FDOH) has handed down an emergency restriction on Gulf Breeze plastic surgeon, Dr. Ben Brown’s license. The emergency restriction of Brown’s license was filed by FDOH on May 2.

Multiple complaints and litigation have come from former patients. Staff and witnesses have also contributed reports of violations of state law pertaining to medicine. These reports included allegations Brown was allowing non-licensed individuals to perform cosmetic procedures, performing the wrong procedure on a patient, failing to keep legible medical records, and not applying proper supervision during procedures.
