Waiting for a real family

Is funding for the arts in Navarre schools falling behind?

In recent years, with budget cuts in federal and state education programs, music and art are subjects which have experienced financial downsizing. In fact, during times with slim funds, many elementary and secondary schools cease to teach these subjects altogether in their classrooms. According to a study conducted and released by the U.S. Department of Education in 2012, more than 1.3 million elementary school students did not receive musical education in schools. In addition, nearly 4 million did not receive visual art classes within their school curriculums.

A time of renewal

For Christians around the world, Easter represents a time of renewal, and a time of remembrance of the death of Jesus and his resurrection.  However you choose to celebrate Easter, whether it is in Church or in your backyard hunting for Easter eggs or both, we at Navarre Press wish you a day of renewal.  Consider it perhaps a transfiguration of sorts; a shedding of whatever is old and stale and an embrace of new things, habits and ideas.  We can all use that in our life, no matter your belief.

County to abandon flood assistance program for 2016

In a Monday committee meeting, the Board of County Commissioners has decided, in line with staff recommendations, that the Flood Mitigation Assistance Program will be abandoned in 2016 due to lack of resident participation.  The vote will take place in Thursday’s full County Commission meeting.

Turtle Center open for educational class

Everyone is anxiously awaiting the arrival of a resident sea turtle or two at the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center, but that doesn’t stop volunteers from teaching without a turtle in the pool. The center has been providing educational classes called “Turtle Trek’s” during the month of March for a $5 donation. The last scheduled class is either 9:30 a.m. or 11:30 a.m. this Saturday, March 26. A maximum of 20 will be allowed to sign up in each class.
