Recreational harvest of red grouper in Gulf state waters to close on Aug. 30

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is closing the recreational harvest of red grouper in state waters of the Gulf of Mexico on Aug. 30 for the remainder of the 2022 fishing season. Harvest will reopen on Jan. 1, 2023.

According to FWC, this closure is consistent with the closure in federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service. The recreational red grouper fishery was closed in federal waters because landings information indicates that the 2022 recreational quota is projected to be met on Aug. 29, 2022.

Red snapper season to start on June 17

The recreational red snapper season will start June 17 in Gulf state and federal waters off Florida and remain open through July 31 with 12 days in the fall.

“We are excited about Governor Ron DeSantis’ recent announcement of this year’s 57-day Gulf red snapper season, which is the longest we’ve had since the FWC began managing the season in state and federal waters,” said Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) Chairman Rodney Barreto in a press release.

For-hire operations that do not have a federal reef fish permit may also participate in the season but are limited to fishing for red snapper in Gulf state waters only.

We were able to get into Aldi two days before it opened and have a tour.

We also did a live video. By the time you are reading this, hopefully you have discovered that we also have Aldi’s inserts. This week there is a $5 off coupon when you spend $30.

Navarre Beach has ‘big parking problem’

Events sponsored by nonprofit groups on Navarre Beach, especially during the high season, came under fire at last week’s Tourist Development Council meeting. Specifically, concerns were expressed about these events taking up parking spaces, a particularly valuable commodity now that tourism has increased threefold in the last half-dozen years.

Blue crab trap closure starts Jan. 5 across Northwest Florida

Recreational and commercial blue crab traps must be removed from some Northwest Florida waters before Jan. 5, the first day of a 10-day trap closure, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC).

In Northwest Florida, blue crab traps may not be in state waters from the Florida/Alabama state line through the Franklin/Wakulla county line from Jan. 5 through Jan. 14. State waters include shore to three nautical miles, including intercoastal waterways.

Wendy’s Words: Look what’s washed up on the beach lately

When my husband and I first moved to the area 25 years ago, we spent every weekend on a local beach. He would fish and I would walk the shoreline, looking for shells, sand dollars or anything else that caught my eye.

There’s something about a body of water as large as the Gulf of Mexico that is exciting. What’s in there that we can’t see? The possibilities are endless.
