West Florida Fire and Nature Festival highlights role of prescribed burns

The University of West Florida is known for its trails as well as its academics.

Much of the trails traverse through longleaf pine forests. The plant, which once spread over 90 million acres across America, is famously fire-resistant and relies on fires to clear out dead underbrush to make room for its seedlings.

The University of West Florida men’s basketball team is headed to the Gulf South Conference championship after a 79-72 win over Lee in the semifinal round on Thursday night at the UWF Fieldhouse.

15 Navarre area students advance to state science fair

Fourteen students from Holley Navarre Middle School and one student from Navarre High School are advancing to the State Science and Engineering Fair.

The 15 students competed in the 71st West Florida Regional Science Fair at the University of West Florida. According to Santa Rosa County District Schools, this year’s fair featured 56 projects, 60 student participants, six schools across two counties and more than $3,500 in awards.

Navarre’s girls lacrosse is ranked among the top eight in Region 1-2A in the first set of FHSAA regional rankings.

The Raiders are seventh in the region after a 7-1 start to their season.

Raider boys lacrosse team ranked among top three in region

Area all-star basketball games slated for next Thursday at PSC

The Pensacola Sports Association All-Star Games are slated for March 12 at Hartsell Arena in Pensacola.

Santa Rosa County will be well represented in the game. Tip-off for the girls contest is 5 p.m. The boys game gets rolling at 7 p.m.

Raider softball team knocks off reigning state champions

Navarre’s softball team knocked off reigning 4A state champion Fort Walton Beach Thursday night on the road.

The Raiders blanked the Vikings 4-0 thanks to a complete game effort from Kaleigh Atchley and a 10-hit performance from the offense.

Oriole Beach Elementary hosts Rare Disease and Disability Awareness Day

Over the past several years, Oriole Beach Elementary School has hosted an event named ‘White Cane Day’ to recognize a blind student enrolled at the school and bring awareness of blindness and other conditions to fellow students.

The annual event has been a big success, with students and teachers participating in a variety of activities to show what life would be like without the use of vision.
