Giving families a Fresh Start

Setting the standard for giving a hand up instead of a hand out, Fresh Start for Children and Families in Fort Walton Beach is changing lives nine families at a time.  The program provides transitional housing for families where mom or dad are gainfully employed or employable and remain drug and alcohol free for the duration of the nine month program.  The apartment house has nine apartments, both one and two bedrooms.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Nearly 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men are victims of rape (Black et al., 2011). But all of us are impacted by sexual violence. That’s because sexual violence affects communities and society — in addition to survivors and their loved ones. Because of this, it’s on all of us to help prevent it.

Relay for Life

Cobia Run makes inaugural start

Under perfect weather conditions, 125 runners made their way to the start line of the first Cobia Run 5K/10K on Navarre Beach Saturday morning.  Proceeds from the run benefited Bright Skies Foundation, a non-profit organized to help patients and families who are struggling with depression, dementia, and Parkinson’s.  The foundation pays for prescriptions, provides counselors, family counseling, travel expenses, home health care and meals.

Spring game a success for Argonauts

Fans lined the grass around University Park Field Saturday morning. Tailgating was in full swing prior to kickoff. Even the cheerleaders were present. It felt like a regular season game in a lot of ways.

Animal Crackups

I’ve had my Harlequin Macaw, Judge, for 12 years now.  In fact we bought him before he was even born, when he was still nestled inside his egg.  He came out looking much like a little bald turkey.  We hand fed him and watched him grow into a magnificent creature.  He would waddle along behind us at home as a baby wanting to get into whatever we were getting into.  So he grew up accustomed to the dogs in our house, learning each one by name.
