The Courthouse is not a palace

Do we need a new tax to fund another disposable courthouse? The county says the 90-year-old structure is too small, has security issues, lacks parking, has inadequate heating/cooling and needs telephone and computer network upgrades. While these may be valid issues, they hardly require a new courthouse.

Never stop learning

Education is a continuing process. Many retired seniors in Santa Rosa County possess a lifetime of work and lifetime experiences and may want to learn something new or even share their expertise by assisting others in learning about new topics or skills. Research indicates keeping the mind active by learning new things keeps us mentally agile.

2016 Farmers Market available to WIC participants

Locally grown fresh produce will be available at the farmers market sponsored by the Florida Department of Health in Santa Rosa County WIC program beginning Monday, April 25.  The market will be open Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. until May 10.  After May 10, the market will be open four days each week, Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., through the end of July. 

May is Military Appreciation Month

Sea Turtle nesting season starts

The highly anticipated nesting season for sea turtles began May 1 and continues until October 31. Navarre Beach is home to four of the six of the species of sea turtles listed as threatened or endangered and protected by the Endangered Species Act; loggerhead, green, leatherback and Kemp’s ridley.

Fabulous Fun Fest for all

The 32nd Annual Navarre Fun Fest presented by Okaloosa Gas and hosted by the Navarre Chamber of Commerce seemingly went off without a hitch on Saturday.  This year’s change in format wrapped all the fun and festivities of a two-day event into one and culminated with the crowd favorite fireworks display.

Green Beret returns to service after amputation

Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. —  A Special Forces noncommissioned officer returned to full active-duty service two and a half years after his hand was amputated to free him from underneath a vehicle before a suicide bomber could strike a deadly blow against he and his team.
