Fall brings festivities, pumpkin patches to local churches
With Autumn upon us, there are many fall festivities going on in the Navarre community. Local churches are getting in on the fall fun too with pumpkin patches and fall festivals.
Several pumpkin patches have been in operation since the first week of October, with Navarre First Assembly of God and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church being two of the churches in the area which have them.
Santa Rosa receives $2.6 million in School Recognition Funding
On Oct. 17, Governor Ron DeSantis awarded more than $200 million in awards through the School Recognition Program. Santa Rosa County District Schools is pleased to be the recipient of $2.6 million in recognition funds. The School Recognition Program recognizes the high quality of many of Florida's public schools. As authorized in Section 1008.36, the program provides greater autonomy and financial awards to schools that demonstrate sustained or significantly improved student performance.
Homemakers Holiday Fair in Milton Saturday
The 41st Annual Homemakers Holiday Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 1 at the Santa Rosa County Auditorium, 4530 Spikes Way in Milton. There is no admission fee for this event.
The Homemakers Holiday Fair features crafts made by local artisans, homemade soup, sandwiches and desserts, and door prizes. Tickets will be available for purchase to win a queen-size handmade quilt. Extra work fuels Lily-ana Campbell’s success
Lily-ana Campbell was driven to be her best for Saturday’s Wildcat Invitational at the Pensacola State Milton Campus.
“I busted my butt during practice this week,” Campbell said. “The past few weeks it was tough getting going, but this week I was just able to go hard.”
SRC Commission to meet at 5 p.m. today
The Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners will hold its committee meeting at 5 p.m. today, Monday, Sept. 19.
To accommodate residents who can’t attend morning meetings because of school or work, the commission will hold its second committee meeting each month (on the third Monday) at 5 p.m.
The commission meets in the county’s office complex at 6495 Caroline St. in Milton.
Estuaries Week features river walk, kayaks, beer
Area residents can celebrate National Estuaries this week with a Blackwater River sunset walk, East Bay kayak tour, even a beer quest.
National Estuaries Week begins Saturday, but the Pensacola & Perdido Bays Estuary Program is getting an early start; its first-ever Brews for the Bays event begins tonight featuring six participating area breweries. Participants can get a Brews for the Bays passport at any of the participating businesses; bartenders will stamp passports whose holders buy that brewery’s “Brew for the Bay.” The first 40 participants to submit their completed passports will get a T-shirt. Brews for the Bays continues through Sunday, Sept. 25.
Participating breweries include: A Little Madness, Coastal County, Gary’s Brewery and Biergarten and Perfect Plain in Pensacola; Beardless Brewhaus in Milton; and St. Michael’s in Navarre.
On Sunday, residents 14 and older are invited to take a free East Bay kayak tour starting from Escribano Point on Choctaw Field Road (off State Road 87 South) beginning at 9 a.m. Officials with Jacobs Engineering (which built the East Bay Oyster Reef Restoration Project), the Florida Public Archaeology Network Northwest and the Pensacola and Perdido Bays Program will provide information and answer questions during the tour.
Some kayaks will be available; paddlers who bring their own kayaks are reminded to bring a life jacket. All participants should bring a lunch and plenty of water and are encouraged to bring hats, closed-tow shoes that can get wet, snacks, sunscreen and bug spray. Participants should bring a snorkel set if they would like to get in the water to examine the oyster reefs.
Milton City Councilman Vernon Compton, a conservationist, will lead a one-hour Blackwater River Sunset Walk beginning about 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, beginning at Beardless Brewhaus, 5139 Elmira St. Volunteers from Florida Public Archaeology Network Northwest and the Pensacola and Perdido Bay Estuaries Program also will offer insights into the river’s history and ecology.
“It’s a great opportunity to come out and celebrate not only National Estuaries Week, but also just the gem that we have in the Blackwater River,” Compton said.
