As we gather to celebrate Independence Day, it’s a good time to reflect on how our most fundamental freedoms have served this nation well.

It’s an even better time to think about what would happen if those liberties were taken away.

Independence Day should mean what it says, Independence. Friday, June 24, we had a taste of what Independence means.

The Supreme Court actually wrote that they, the Supreme Court of the United States, do not have the power to rule that abortion is legal throughout out the United States.

It is HOT outside! As I am writing this it is 94 degrees Fahrenheit, or “foreign-heat,” as a beloved Canadian comedian once coined.

Canada is on the metric system, so my family would be complaining that it is a sweltering 35 degrees Celsius, which, I think you would agree, sounds more tolerable.

Four years. It just doesn’t seem possible.

But, yes, it really has been that long since DJ Deas, a promising young athlete who seemingly had the world at his fingertips, died by suicide shortly after the end of the school year.

Recently, I found myself in an uncomfortable situation; I was in the men’s section of a local department store buying pants.

In my mind, I am still that young man whose leg length is greater than his waist girth. So, I head to the changing room with two pairs of pants, one pair that agrees with my illusion, the other that I know I am going to purchase.

Thankfully the Garcon Point Bridge toll has finally been reduced to as low as $2.30 per trip versus $5 per trip.

Another bonus is that the tolls collected on the Garcon Point Bridge will remain in Florida instead of to an out-of-state bond.

On June 8, U.S. Congressman Matt Gaetz (FL-01) debated the provisions of H.R. 7910, the “Protect Our Children Act” on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Rep. Gaetz objected to the legislation as a misguided and ineffective assault on the Second Amendment, specifically taking issue with raising the age to buy a rifle from 18- to 21-year-old.

I came across a blank Father’s Day card the other day while cleaning off my desk at home.

I can’t tell you when I bought it or why it was never sent. Perhaps it was an extra card that I planned to send out for Father’s Day down the road.
