Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office K9 shines at police dog event

Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office’s own K9 Dozer and Sergeant Clay Smith, his handler, competed at the 2022 USPCA National Police Dog Field Trials in Lowndes County, Georgia. The Field Trials took place Sept. 18 to Sept. 23. The USPCA stands for United States Police Canine Association.

Walton pitches site for medical examiner’s facility

Three months ago, the District One Medical Examiner’s Office Board of Directors – DOMES – was focused on buying property in Milton for its new facility. Last week, the number of potential sites blossomed to four.

“Up until July, the board’s consensus was (that the new building would be in) Santa Rosa County,” DOMES Chief Executive Officer Dan Shebler said Sept. 28 at a special facilities meeting. “Walton County has offered us free land in one of its industrial parks; that makes four potential sites.”

Amongst the noise of the Sept. 20 water board meeting, one member of the board of the directors announced he would be stepping down. Mike Kennedy, who has served on the board since 2019, informed the rest of the board he would tender his resignation in the coming weeks.

On the farm: LEAD Academy teaches everything agriculture

When you go to LEAD Academy off Chumuckla Highway, you might hear teachers teaching arithmetic, children talking and playing, and… cows mooing?

Not too many schools have a barn, but LEAD Academy is not your typical school. Founded in 2013, LEAD Academy is a private, Christian academy that teaches things such as grammar, logic, and rhetoric. On top of those, they also have an agriculture program.
