Spring is in the air and people are starting to go back into the water.

With the increased numbers of beachgoers, the potential for drowning and other risks increases. It is around this time every year that the Navarre Beach Lifeguards begin to make their full presence known.

A strong cold front will make its way through Northwest Florida Friday night into Saturday morning bringing a chance of thunderstorms across the area including potential for damaging winds, large hail, and a couple tornadoes.

A Freeze Warning is in effect from 9 p.m. Saturday to 9 a.m. Sunday. A Wind Advisory remains in effect from midnight Friday to 6 p.m. Saturday. Bring in plants, secure outdoor objects and use extra caution when driving.

In the past five days, gas prices in Florida have jumped to the highest levels since 2008, rising on average 48 cents per gallon.

Beginning this Mon., Mar. 14, the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit will be hosting the USPCA Region 1 Field Trials here in Santa Rosa County. The Trials are a week-long event which is a certification and a competition. Activities start Mon., 8:00 am at Gulf Breeze High School. This day will consist of obedience and agility. Tues., 8:00 am at GBHS, there will be suspect area searches. Wednesday will be apprehension work. Thursday morning the apprehension work will continue until completed. All events are open to the public.

General Ashley Moody is urging all Floridians who may be affected by the breach to take appropriate steps to protect personal information from identity thieves.

The cold weather shelter for the homeless and/or heatless will open nights Fri., Mar. 11 through Sun., Mar. 13 at Ferris Hill Baptist Church, 6848 Chaffin St. in Milton. Those who would like to stay at the shelter must arrive between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Only service animals (with verification of rabies vaccination) are permitted to stay with guests. No one will be admitted after 8:30 p.m. unless brought in by law enforcement. The shelter closes at 7 a.m. each morning.

Around noon Friday, Mar. 4, a wildfire in Bay County had spread to 100 acres and by Friday evening the Adkins Avenue wildfire had spread to 1,400 acres.

Santa Rosa County officials on Tues., Mar. 1, honored former County Commissioner Don Salter by naming a street that leads into the new Whiting Aviation Park after him. About 75 people were in attendance when the street sign labeled Don Salter Boulevard was unveiled by Salter and his family. Several people, including Salter, spoke at the event.
