It was a successful weekend for the Navarre Navy JROTC.

The Raider battalion competed in a district drill meet featuring Escambia and Santa Rosa County Schools and came away with a third-place finish overall at the meet, which was held at Milton High.

When people hear about those with developmental or intellectual disabilities, they typically don’t think of them helping others. It’s those who have disabilities that need the help, right?

If you visit Beehive Homes Assisted Living on a Monday morning, you will find out that isn’t always the case. For four weeks, the clients of Arc Gateway, an organization which provides services to developmentally disabled people, have been visiting the assisted living facility to help be a light in the lives of residents.

On Thurs., Oct. 20, Navarre Library held a ‘STEAMaker’ event. The event gathered children from 10 to 17 years old who are interested in robotics, coding, and other tech together for an hour each month.

STEAMaker is a play on words in reference to STEAM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. STEAM has become a key component of education in schools and the Santa Rosa Library System created STEAMaker to help facilitate learning beyond the classroom.

Music can have an enormous impact.

Songs can raise awareness of an issue such as Creedence Clearwater Revival’s anti-war anthem “Fortunate Son,” reflect an evolving society such as Bob Dylan’s “Times They Are A-Changin,” raise money for a worthy cause like Live Aid in 1985, and some music can inspire people on a personal level.

Titus Perea plays basketball and runs cross-country and track. He’s pretty good at those sports. Turns out, he’s not bad at competing in triathlons either.

The 9-year-old Coastline Calvary Christian student did his first one earlier this month on Navarre Beach, completing the Zarzaur Law Sea Turtle Youth Triathlon in under 20 minutes.

Area residents who enjoy crocheting or knitting are invited to help GFWC Santa Rosa Woman’s Club provide handmade afghans for campers at Camp Boggy Creek in Eustis, Florida.  Martha Brenenstahl, club chairman of the state president’s project, is asking for volunteers with time and yarn on their hands.“We know many people enjoy crocheting or knitting for a hobby but don’t always have a place to donate their handmade creations,” says Brenenstahl.  “We hope people will open their hearts and yarn baskets.”  The camp prides itself on “handmade” rather than purchased afghans.

Advanced Fire Protection Services held a demonstration at Holley Navarre Fire District’s open house on Oct. 15.

The demonstration showed people the difference fire sprinklers can make in a house fire.

Competing at a drill meet in Gulf Breeze over the weekend, the Navarre Navy JROTC unit turned in a strong performance.

Though it was an exhibition meet and an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming qualifying meets for Navy Nationals, the Raider battalion put time and effort into the meet, placing in the top three in seven events, including a pair of first-place finishes.

The Peanut Butter Challenge, UF/IFAS Extension’s annual collection for local food pantries that launched in the Florida Panhandle in 2012, is again spreading statewide this year. In 2021, citizens of Santa Rosa County donated 1,142 jars of peanut butter to the challenge. That’s approximately 1,635 pounds.

The Challenge runs from Oct. 1 to Oct. 31.

It was a busy weekend in Navarre.

Several community events took place this past Saturday, including a car show, a cookoff and a children’s event at the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center.
