Judge dismisses Stand Your Ground case

A Santa Rosa County Judge has dismissed a case involving Florida’s ‘Stand Your Ground’ Law.

The case, which was heard in November 2024, involved two men, one of whom shot the other. According to the order granting the defendant’s motion to dismiss, the incident which sparked the case happened in the early morning hours of Nov. 7, 2022.

K9, deputy involved crash spotlights emergency vehicle law

A K9 unit with Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office was involved in Dec. 27 crash at the intersection of Edgewood Drive and Highway 98. Deputy D. Hopkins of the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office was injured in the crash, sustaining a concussion, head laceration, and other minor injuries from the incident.

Hopkins’ K9 Partner, K9 Riggs, had no apparent injuries, according to the agency.

Navarre High wins Special Olympics Florida award

Special Olympics Florida recently announced the winners of several awards, each recognizing a person or organization who has gone above and beyond to help Special Olympics reach more people and fulfill its mission of ensuring people with disabilities are treated with respect and given opportunities to compete in athletics.
One of the awards, the Marilyn Grigsby Award, was awarded to Navarre High School for more than a decade of support for Special Olympics Florida in Santa Rosa County. According to Special Olympics Florida, the Marilyn Grigsby Award recognizes organizations that provide sustained service, leadership, and impact over five years or more.

A look at the FHSAA regional soccer rankings

The FHSAA regional rankings for girls and boys soccer currently feature just one Santa Rosa County team in the top eight.


The Raider girls soccer team is sixth in the Region 1-6A rankings. Navarre has won four in a row and sits at 8-4 on the season.

Property tax exemptions filing window opens with new year

Santa Rosa County Property Appraiser Greg Brown II wants residents to mark their calendars. From Jan. 1, 2025, to March 1, 2025, residents can file for a homestead exemption. Two other exemptions, one for persons 65 and over and the other for deployed servicemembers, has a five-month filing window from Jan. 1, 2025, to June 1, 2025.

According to the Property Appraiser’s website, all persons who own and reside on real property in Florida on January 1 and make the property their permanent residence is eligible to receive a homestead exemption up to $50,000.

Gas station planned for Highway 98, near Edgewood Drive

A convenience store with fuel pumps is planned for 6827 Gulf Breeze Parkway, on the southside of Highway 98, near the southern terminus of Edgewood Drive. According to plans submitted to Santa Rosa County Development Services, the store will be approximately 6,372 sq. ft. with a 9,909 sq. ft. fuel canopy. Under the fuel canopy, there will be 10 pumps.

No education without representation

A student on the school board? Several Santa Rosa County students called for some form of student representation at the June 13 school board meeting. “A student advisor (or representative) is not just an advisor to the school board but a liaison to the student body,” said Riley Perantoni, a Gulf Breeze teen. Similar leadership positions are held by students in Leon, Broward, and Miami Dade counties. School board member Linda Sanborn expressed interest in creating a student advisory committee instead of a board representative.
