Pensacola Bay Bridge project set for 2017 start

Plans for building a new 6-lane Pensacola Bay Bridge are moving forward. Two public meetings are on the horizon, and the nearly $600 million toll-free project is expected to begin in 2017. Meanwhile, plans to widen a portion of U.S. 98 east of Gulf Breeze await construction funding.

Local water quality in Gulf and Sound remain good

All five Gulf of Mexico water sampling locations on Navarre Beach, as well as a sample taken from the Santa Rosa Sound near Navarre Park all returned “good” ratings from the Florida Department of Health. The samples were taken March 31 with results posted to the Florida Healthy Beaches website April 4.

Home sales up, condo market struggles

According to a report released by Florida© Realtors last week, the number of single family home sold statewide in February grew by less than 2 percent compared to last year, while the Santa Rosa and Escambia County market saw an increase of 19.5 percent. That growth was the fourth best among the 20 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) included in the report.

Mary Esther man charged in fatal crash

The Florida Highway Patrol reported March 25 that 27-year-old Duloris Marie Gonzalez, a passenger in a vehicle driven by 28-year-old Sean Ryan Gallagher, died from injuries she sustained in an early morning crash on Highway 98 just east of the Santa-Rosa Okaloosa County line.

Raider soccer players shine in all star games

Navarre was well represented in the 2014 Subway Senior All-Star games Feb. 20 at Ashton Brosnaham soccer complex in Pensacola. Hannah Gullickson, Hunter Moorer, Ella Burkhardt, Bri Young, Gabby Armstrong and Jade Whitley joined other players from Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties on the East squad. The West roster consisted of seniors from Escambia County high schools.

Mixed housing results to start 2014

A report from Florida Realtors® showed the number of sales of single family homes and townhouses and condos in Florida increased by double digits in January 2014 compared with a year earlier. The Santa Rosa and Escambia County markets out-paced the state average for single family home sales but lagged far behind for townhouse and condo sales.

Some unique geological and historical features in Walton County lie roughly 50 miles north of the Gulf beaches, which attract exponentially more visitors each year. Off the beaten path, just a short drive north of DeFuniak Springs, is the highest point in Florida and a natural limestone bridge.
