Keep your pet safe July 4th

Statistics show that more dogs run away and are lost on July 4 than any other day of the year. In many cases, the loud noise that accompanies fireworks is too much for pets that suffer from noise phobia. They get frantic, run and get separated from their owners.

Out and About

There will be fireworks in Navarre on July 4. The tourism development council is paying for the fireworks and the Navarre Beach Area Chamber Foundation is managing the execution of the fireworks. Anywhere on the island is a good spot to watch them – including Juana’s Pagoda’s or Lagerheads on the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier. Also, there will be crowds at Navarre Park but there will not be any planned entertainment July 4. Hopefully we will have good weather.

Candidates disclose personal finances

Local candidates for county commission and school board seats were required to disclose personal financial information by June 20. The reports reveal interesting facts, including one candidate owns a $30,000 train collection, while another owes seven people promissory notes, totaling almost $100,000. Other candidates disclosed their sources of income and net worth. Only one is a millionaire.

FEMA deadline July 7

If you were impacted by floodwaters from the April 29 storm, you have only until 10 p.m., July 7 to apply for disaster assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). All FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers in northwest Florida have closed, but applications can still be made online at disasterassistance.gov or by calling 800-621-3362.

Oil spill funds stormwater project

A $1.8 million stormwater project that is designed to make Gulf Breeze neighborhoods less vulnerable to floods started with a ceremonial groundbreaking June 25 in Williamsburg Park. The project is being funded from a settlement between the US Department of Justice and MOEX Offshore, one of the owners of the offshore oil rig that exploded, creating the Deepwater Horizon spill.

Fireworks aren’t child’s play

The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) reported that children under the age of five had the highest rate for fireworks related injuries in 2013. According to CPSC, past reports indicate that consumers sometimes feel comfortable handing off to children fireworks devices perceived to be less powerful, such as sparklers and bottle rockets. In 2013, sparklers and rockets accounted for more than 40 percent of all estimated injuries.

Businesses face permitting issues

Two businesses operating in the Navarre area along Highway 98 are working through separate permitting processes for outdoor amusements on land and in the water. According to regulators, neither business had secured the necessary permits to begin operating the outdoor amusements.

Ducks, guns and golf

A ceremonial shotgun start kicked off the 2014 Ducks Unlimited charity golf tournament June 21. Seventy-two golfers lined up for a chance to win Stoeger shotguns among other prizes.

New chick signs

Personnel from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) posted four, bright yellow signs on the Navarre Beach Causeway Bridge Friday hoping that they will help slow traffic passing through a shorebird nesting area. The signs are the latest effort to protect the shorebirds and their chicks that are not yet able to fly.
