RESTORE Council to set funding criteria

Santa Rosa’s RESTORE Council is trying to determine how to establish evaluation criteria to review projects submitted to the county for funding via RESTORE Act dollars. So far, 19 proposed projects have been submitted for consideration. For a complete list of proposed projects, visit our website at http://www.navarrepress.com/news/13/6333-nineteen-projects-vie-for-restore-act-funds. At the July 8 RESTORE Council meeting, Commissioner Lane Lynchard, who serves as chairman of the council, pointed out that just three of the submitted projects add up to roughly $130 million, underscoring the need for the county to develop evaluation criteria to make funding decisions. “We’re going to have to really work and prioritize the funding that we get,” said Lynchard.

Fourth of July celebrations conjure up a familiar image for most of us: Luminescent streams of red, white and blue bursting overhead at dusk. Fireworks have been an integral part of many cultural celebrations around the world and in the U.S. since colonial times. Many historians believe that fireworks first originated in China as early as 200 B.C. Bamboo would be put over a fire which would cause it to explode.

CERT makes waves, then contact, on the beach

The Navarre Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Amateur Radio Club could be seen making waves out on Navarre Beach last weekend. However, it wasn’t the gentle waves of the Gulf of Mexico rolling ashore that drew them to the Black Skimmer Pavilion. These radio gurus were making waves of a different kind — radio waves.

Sunshine law hampers RESTORE Act in Florida

Four states impacted by the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill have already received a draft of the much anticipated RESTORE Act implementation regulations from the U.S. Department of Treasury. Santa Rosa is not among those, and fingers are being pointed at the state’s open government laws.
