When you buy a house, you negotiate the sales price.  When you buy a car, you negotiate the bottom dollar on the car.  When you take a new job, you negotiate the salary and terms of your employment.  Very few things in life are set in stone – most things are negotiable.  Our county seems to have forgotten the art of negotiating.  Good dealmaking means the money goes further. 

No cents in Tough Mudder debacle

Thanks for the great article in your Dec. 17 issue: “Commissioner raises concerns with Tough Mudder.” I just sent the below letter to the Board of County Commissioners hoping they get it at some point. Continuing to spend bed tax funds on events where the organizers make more than $1 million does not make sense to me. Keep pushing this as most of us don’t want to see our limited funds used on these events.

Auto Depot conditional-use request denied

When Andy Pike opened Auto Depot on Highway 87 south in Navarre in March it was on one of the three lots he was leasing for the business directly in front of Navarre Auto Repair.  The lot was originally approved for used car sales for eight vehicles in 2012.  The business grew quickly and Pike had to expand to the other two lots on the property.  What he didn’t realize, was one of those lots was zoned differently than the others.

During the Dec. 8 budget meeting of the Holley-Navarre Water System (HNWS) Board, one thing caught the board members by complete surprise: the benefits package purchased for the employees of the water department, specifically health insurance.

For the second year in a row, Commander Naval Installations Command named Naval Air Station Whiting Field as the recipient of the Installation Excellence Award.  The award lauds the top Navy commands at shore for their installation management, program excellence and community outreach.
