The best fed babies are breastfed babies

Research indicates that breastfeeding is beneficial for both mother and infant. Not only is breast milk easier to digest than formula, babies who are exclusively breastfed for at least the first 6 months have fewer ear and respiratory infections than those who are bottle fed and are less likely to become overweight or obese. Antibodies passed from mother to baby while nursing help protect the baby from communicable diseases for the first few months of life. Mothers who breastfeed have less risk of breast and ovarian cancer, less risk of osteoporosis, and lose the weight they gained during pregnancy faster than mothers who do not breastfeed. There are also economic benefits.  Families save money because they do not have to buy formula and bottles. Working mothers who breastfeed may miss fewer days from work caring for a sick baby and spend less on doctor visits and medicine.

Inflatables on zoning board agenda

The giant inflatable slide next to East River Smokehouse on Navarre Parkway has been a fixture all summer. After county officials notified the owner in late June that the slides could no longer be operated based on the property’s current zoning, the owner filed a conditional use permit seeking permission to operate the inflatables.

Long-awaited RESTORE guidelines expected this week

U.S. Senator Bill Nelson met with local leaders Aug. 6 in Pensacola, pushing for release of hundreds of millions of dollars intended to help Florida’s coastal communities recover from the April 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion, which resulted in the largest oil spill U.S. history.

Water line repair hits snag

The plan was made. The pipe was fabricated. And a new line that was designed to fit inside a broken water line under East Bay started to make its way in to the pipe. And then, it hit a snag.

Decals support sea turtles, manatees

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) announced July 31 that newly designed decals are available for purchase with proceeds supporting research, rescue, rehabilitation and management of Florida’s endangered sea turtles and manatees. Rescues of manatees and sea turtles that are injured, ill or otherwise in distress are one of the many FWC conservation activities supported by decal donations.

‘Let’s go be the church’

Every Sunday, Ferris Hill Baptist’s pastor ends his sermons with a charge for his congregation.  “Let’s go be the church,” said Pastor Brian Nall, whose flock for eight years has spent Mondays preparing food and sorting donated clothes which are given away each Tuesday.

Is the water safe?

Navarre Beach was making headlines and blowing up social media this past week as a video of a hammerhead shark near the shore literally “went viral.” The video, shot by a tourist visiting Navarre Beach, showed the hammerhead heading toward shore and apparently making its way closer and closer to a swimmer. Before getting too close, the shark changed course and went on its way. A Navarre Beach lifeguard had entered the water to make sure all swimmers safely made it to shore. And they did.
