Severe storms possible, sand available at four locations within the county

Heavy rainfall and localized flash flooding, particularly of low lying and urban areas, is possible beginning today, Wed., May 25, through the evening of Thurs., May 26 along with a tornado threat through Thursday morning, according to the US National Weather Service in Mobile.

There is also a high risk of rip currents along Navarre Beach through Friday night. Santa Rosa County Emergency Management officials are encouraging residents to monitor local weather reports and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, especially overnight.

Cailyn Hamstra announced as Santa Rosa Rookie of the Year

The Santa Rosa Education Foundation (SREF) announced Cailyn Hamstra at Gulf Breeze High School as the 2022 Santa Rosa Rookie of the Year during their Rookie of the Year Reception Wednesday afternoon, May 4. She was selected from a field of 35 educators with three or less years of teaching experience who were honored at this event. The Gulf Breeze Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation presented Hamstra with a $500 award.

Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office to hold Citizen’s Law Enforcement Academy

After two years of not being able to offer the class, Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office recently announced that the Citizen’s Law Enforcement Academy is set to be back on May 26.

The Academy, which is a 10-week program, offers an exclusive look at the Sheriff’s Office and the work that they do. It is just for Santa Rosa County residents.

Santa Rosa cold weather shelter to open Fri., Mar. 11 through Sun., Mar. 13

The cold weather shelter for the homeless and/or heatless will open nights Fri., Mar. 11 through Sun., Mar. 13 at Ferris Hill Baptist Church, 6848 Chaffin St. in Milton. Those who would like to stay at the shelter must arrive between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Only service animals (with verification of rabies vaccination) are permitted to stay with guests. No one will be admitted after 8:30 p.m. unless brought in by law enforcement. The shelter closes at 7 a.m. each morning.

Don Salter, longtime county commissioner, honored with road dedication

Santa Rosa County officials on Tues., Mar. 1, honored former County Commissioner Don Salter by naming a street that leads into the new Whiting Aviation Park after him. About 75 people were in attendance when the street sign labeled Don Salter Boulevard was unveiled by Salter and his family. Several people, including Salter, spoke at the event.
