County addresses Navarre gas leaks

Between June and July, Holley-Navarre Fire Department responded to 11 separate gas leaks – each caused by fiber optic boring activity. The fiber lines, most owned by Live Oak Fiber, inadvertently struck underground gas lines maintained by Okaloosa Gas District, prompting repeated shelter-in-place orders for local residents.

County Commissioners approve Soundside conservation project funding

The Soundside Conservation Project, a movement for Santa Rosa County to purchase a 27-acre plot of land in Gulf Breeze off Soundside Drive and designate it for conservation, has been approved by a unanimous vote of Santa Rosa County Commissioners July 10. The land encompasses 4 acres of uplands and 23 acres of “high quality wetlands” according to an appraisal of the property. The wetlands feed into a creek that empties into the Santa Rosa Sound. 

County, pier operator collaborating on beach volleyball courts

With the growth of sports tourism, as well as a desire from county residents for more recreational amenities, Santa Rosa County officials are looking to add more sports recreational opportunities on the south end of the county.

One place the county is currently planning to add sports recreation is Navarre Beach.

State funding for county project vetoed by governor

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the Budget for Fiscal Year 2025-2026 June 30 after vetoing line items totaling $567 million, including several proposed Santa Rosa County projects. The final 2025-2026 budget added up to $117.9 billion, less than the previous year’s and marking the second consecutive year of reduced state spending.

Twelve Oaks expansion project approved by County with stipulation

Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners approved plans for the expansion of Twelve Oaks Recovery Center with some minor caveats based on community input.

With the expansion, Twelve Oaks will increase their patient capacity by 26 beds and add a 7,500 square foot facility for therapy meeting rooms and dining. Additionally, the recovery center is adding or updating the fencing surrounding its property to better accommodate a neighboring subdivision’s residents. A parking lot with 50 to 60 spaces is also being added to meet the facility’s needs.

The Land Development Code (LDC) Task Force will hold their next meeting at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, May 30 in the Administrative Complex, 6495 Caroline Street in Milton. This meeting will be streamed live online. The agenda for this meeting will be published shortly.
