Last Thursday we said goodbye to two county commissioners whose bid for re-election failed…and failed miserably. Sam Parker and James Calkins are moving on down the road, one is literally moving. Calkins sold his house in Milton and has moved out of Santa Rosa County. Not a bad idea, one we can all get behind. There probably would have been a line of volunteers to pack the moving truck if he had asked for help.

Commissioner Kerry Smith named BOCC Chair

On Tuesday, Nov. 19, the Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners held their annual reorganization meeting in conjunction with the oath of office ceremony for districts 1, 3 and 5. During the meeting, the board selected new leadership. Commissioner Kerry Smith, District 2, was unanimously selected to serve as the board chairman.

On Wednesday nights and Sundays, you’ll find Billory Baptist Church pastor Jeremy Gault leading Bible study, services, and community outreach efforts. Monday through Friday, however, you’ll find him working with students throughout Santa Rosa County as a tutor for the school district’s McKinney Vento Education for Homeless Children and Youth Program, a role he has held since August.

School district employee resigns amid alleged financial improprieties

An employee of Santa Rosa County District Schools has resigned from their position after an investigation found that the employee had engaged in “financial improprieties.”

In a statement to Navarre Press, the school district said the resignation came after the employee, later identified as Kelly Short (Allen), was informed of action that would be taken against her employment both immediately and through recommendation of the school board at their next regularly scheduled meeting on Nov. 19, 2024.

Sheriff looking for victim of attempted carjacking

Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public’s assistance in identifying a victim of an attempted carjacking that occurred on November 04, 2024, at approximately 8:40 p.m. at Circle K located at 5661 Quintette Rd in Pace.
