Nearly 100 support Mobility 5k

The threat of rain and severe weather March 29 didn’t dampen the enthusiasm for the first Run, Walk or Roll for Mobility 5k and 1-mile run on Navarre Beach. The morning of the event, organizers chose to push the start time from 8 to 9 a.m. to allow lingering showers to move out of the area prior to the race.

Students organize career-centered beauty pageant

A teacher and students from Locklin Technical Center in Milton will be hosting a career-focused beauty pageant Saturday. The first Miss Beauty that Works Pageant will allow girls who are competing to show off an outfit of her choice representing her future career field.

Child Abuse Awareness Month

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and Santa Rosa Kids’ House, which provides services for abused children, is holding related awareness activities. Last year there were more than 1,500 reports of child abuse in Santa Rosa County, and the group hopes to curb that number through prevention efforts.

Residents complete emergency response training

Fourteen area residents completed a 26-hour Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) course that ended with a mock disaster exercise March 30 at the Holley-Navarre Senior Center.  The Navarre Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) conducted the training over two consecutive weekends.

The Navarre Beach Area Chamber of Commerce at its monthly meeting March 28 announced its Business and Member of the Month, as well as its Ambassador of the Quarter.

Storm wreaks havoc on beach

A line of thunderstorms Friday packing winds estimated at 60 mph or more damaged Santa Rosa County facilities on Navarre Beach leaving lifeguards with only one usable lifeguard stand from which to monitor the beach and swimmers in the Gulf of Mexico.

Big time turnaround

The Navarre Raiders baseball team had a dismal start to the 2014 season. They lost their first three games by a combined score of 26-4. After picking up a victory in a 3-1 win over Gulf Breeze, they dropped their next four.

Lady Raiders win JV tournament

While the Lady Raider varsity softball teamed worked at a car wash March 22, the JV team members were hard at work playing in the Raider JV tournament. The four-team tourney included Escambia, Gulf Breeze, West Florida and Navarre. Each team played three games and at the end of a long day of softball, the Lady Raiders were named tournament champions.

Rescue groups gather for Pet Adoption Day in Pace

Alyssa’s Antique Depot in Pace will be hosting its first-ever Pet Adoption Day this Saturday to help find homes for local rescue animals. Owner of Joyful Pets Liz Ohlhorst is organizing the event, which will feature 16 local rescue groups and nine support groups. Joyful Pets is a pet boutique and one of the vendors located inside of Alyssa’s Antique Depot.
