Raiders beat Gulf Breeze in final regular season game

The Gulf Breeze Dolphins proved to be nice bookends for the Raiders’ season. After falling in their first two games, Navarre picked up their first regular season win against the Dolphins. On April 15, the Raiders got their final regular season win at Gulf Breeze.

More vets turn to prosthetics to help legless pets 

Los Angeles (AP) — More veterinarians are using wheelchairs, orthotics and prosthetics to improve the lives of dogs that have lost limbs to deformity, infection or accident, experts say. The move is driven by persistent pet owners who embrace their animals as family and aren’t deterred by the cost and commitment of outfitting disabled dogs with the devices. At the same time, there have been great strides in technology to keep up with U.S. soldiers returning wounded from war, and veterinarians have adapted the materials and know-how for the rising demand from clients.

Northwest Florida deer hunting regulations changing

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) met near Tallahassee April 17 and voted to change deer hunting regulations in northwest Florida. One hunting organization in the region provided input about the proposed changes and was pleased with the commission’s final decision.

Reef project construction could start this year

Bob Boston of Navarre updated commissioners April 21 on two Navarre Beach reef projects selected for early restoration funding resulting from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.  Permitting is complete for one project and should be complete for another next month – construction for both may start this fall.

Logistics big business, big opportunities

About 30 elected officials and business leaders attended a Florida Chamber of Commerce half-day conference in Pensacola April 18 highlighting the importance of trade and logistics to the region and the state. The conference was the third regional rollout for the chamber’s Trade & logistics Study 2.0.

Lady Raiders finish season with 2 wins

Milton 2, Navarre 1

The Raiders traveled to Milton on April 8 and lost a nail biter, 2 – 1.  The Raider offense only managed 3 hits in the game. Hanna Stapleton pitched five strong innings for the Raiders and gave up only one hit and no runs. The Raiders took a one run lead into the sixth inning. Coach Kim Smith brought Taelor Smith in to pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning. Smith hit the first batter she faced and then gave up a game winning home run to the next batter.

Pier enforces no pets rule

Navarre Beach resident Paul Albuquerque takes his dog Olas most everywhere he goes. The Bassett Hound and Australian Shepherd mix often accompanies Albuquerque and his wife at the beach, the park and even when they go out to eat.

Science station event embraces autism

Charlene Mauro, project director of the Marine Science Station, saw a need in the community for an event welcoming families with autism spectral disorders and started Autism OdysSea, first held in 2013. About 150 children and their families, totaling 450 people, attended the second annual event held April 12.
