Let’s go fly a kite

Kite flying has been known to be child’s play, but not necessarily for a group of kite flying enthusiasts who have formed The Emerald Coast Kite Flyer’s Club. Members like Tonya Layton take a lot of pride in their handmade kite creations. She showed off the kite that she made herself, a dolphin she named Marty, at the club’s recent gathering at Opal Beach. Many club members bring family and friends to weekend “Club Fun Flys” the third Sunday of each month or whenever the club wants to get together.

State champion Kylie Shelley looks to future

In February, Kylie Shelley won the state weightlifting championship in the 119-pound weight division. However, she felt there was something missing. “It was a much better feeling in 2013, when we won the team championship,” Shelley said. “We stood on that platform together to accept our championship medals. We had worked hard together and it was only right that we celebrated together.”

Students clean the beach

Navarre High School football players and cheerleaders are accustomed to performing on grass, but they showed May 28 they can also make important plays on sand.

Local girl chooses charity over presents

Twelve-year-old MaKayla Crouch received 1,200 pounds of dog and cat food for her birthday May 22.

Perhaps what is most surprising about her gifts was that they were exactly what she asked for.

Slow down, save chicks

Endangered shorebirds began their annual nesting along the Navarre Beach Causeway Bridge a few weeks ago, and a variety of efforts are now underway to keep them and their soon-to-be-hatched chicks safe from motorists.

Military appreciates community

On a day when Navarre Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and Military Affairs Council (MAC) members gathered to thank the military, the event’s speaker turned the tables and spent his time thanking business and community leaders.

Healing and HOW

Some call it fishing, but the Emerald Coast Heroes on the Water (HOW) call it healing. A group of 25 volunteers met early Saturday morning to take nearly 25 veterans on the healing waters of the Intracoastal Waterway adjacent to Navarre Park. One of the veteran anglers was Chuck Tingle who joined the group fishing for the first time in May 2013 in Navarre Park and completed what he believed to be his sixth fishing trip with HOW Saturday. “It takes you out of the daily grind and I enjoy the camaraderie,” said Tingle. He spent 24 years in the Air Force in command and control and was stationed in the area from 1987-89, and he knew he wanted to retire to the area.
