Area golfers compete in Byron Nathan Classic

High school golfers in Santa Rosa County got their first big test of the season on Monday, playing in the Byron Nathan Classic at Stonebrook.

Golfers played 18 holes for the first time this season in live competition, battling not only the course but also the hot and humid conditions enveloping the day here in Pace.

Santa Rosa schools counselors provide mental health resources

Each September serves as National Suicide Prevention Month, a time to bring awareness to mental health issues and the resources that could save people’s lives.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide was responsible for 48,824 deaths in 2024, the most recent year the agency has statistics for. While this amounts to a little over 1.5 percent of the total deaths across the U.S., CDC stats show a profound increase in the suicide rate per 100,000 from 2001 to 2024. Suicide tragically touches everyone, including children.

St. Sylvester Catholic Church holds 9/11 ceremony

On Sunday, Sept. 6, a crowd of more than 100 people gathered outside St. Sylvester Catholic Church to honor the lives lost during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The attacks, collectively known as 9/11, killed almost 3,000 people and have changed the U.S. in myriad ways, including the emergence of the Department of Homeland Security, tighter airport security and the launch of the war on terror.

Soundside High AFJROTC takes off

The first year of Soundside High School also marks the beginning of its Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program.

AFJROTC is a military-sponsored program available to high school students. Under federal law, JROTC programs are intended to instill the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment.

Eddington tells boardwalk opponents to leave county

Santa Rosa County Commissioner Ray Eddington told residents opposed to a proposed Navarre Beach boardwalk that they were hypocrites and suggested they leave the county toward the end of a public comment period at a Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners agenda meeting Sept. 8.

Soundside High students have say in alma mater

For generations, school alma maters have been part of graduations, pep rallies and other traditions.

While the definition of alma mater is the school or university a person graduated from, it also refers to the school’s official anthem. Generally, it’s a tune representing the history, location or values of the school.
