I was looking forward to covering high school football on Oct. 9. Another chance to be under the lights of Friday night.

Instead, I was at home waiting out the wrath of Hurricane Isaias, the wind blowing hard in the dark of night and my mind left to wonder what kind of destruction would be left behind once the storm was over.

Pirates on the Panhandle donate $7,500 to Soundside High

Pirates on the Panhandle, a social group that organizes fundraisers for local charities and nonprofits, recently set their sights on Soundside High School’s exceptional student education (ESE) student-athletes.

Wednesday, Oct. 7, members of the social group were joined by Soundside High faculty and students for a check presentation. The check, worth $7,500, was presented to the school to support the school’s unified sports program and its Special Olympics activities.

Raider volleyball team makes school history as district champs!

Amiyah Byrd’s final volleyball match inside the Navarre Raider gymnasium will forever be a memorable one.

Less than a week after a hurricane hit the area, closing schools and putting the fate of the District 1-6A tournament in question as far as when it would be played, Byrd and the Raiders came out ready to go Thursday night, beating Pace in four sets to claim the program’s first ever district title.

Destiny Worship Center serves over 4,000 after hurricane

Dozens of vehicles lined the roadways around Destiny Worship Center in Navarre Sunday, Oct. 11, to get a hot meal. In the subsequent days, more vehicles made their way to Destiny Worship Center for a hot meal, pack of water, ice and even prayer.

In all, over 4,000 people made their way to the church during the multiday, drive-thru event.

Looking back at Soundside’s first volleyball season

Soundside’s first volleyball season in program history wrapped up earlier this month. And head coach Chris Williams was pleased with the way it turned out.

“I think it went really well,” Williams said. “One of the best things was the way the girls worked together and showed up every day ready to work hard. They came in with a lot of energy every day.”

Football set to return next week for area high school teams

After two weeks of no Friday Night Lights because of Hurricane Isaias and its aftermath, football will be back next week for high school teams in Santa Rosa County.

But the schedule is going to look a little different than it did prior to the storm, which hit the area hard on Oct. 9.
